That reminds me of many years ago when someone in the premiership signed someone who wasnt a footballer...who the hell was that? Something makes me want to say Keegan or Souness, but I dont recall who it was. I remember them signing some guy who wasnt a footballer and playing him for like 15 mins and then thinking wtf?? :)

Ahhh it was Souness...when he was at Southampton..

Days later, Dia was signed by Southampton manager Graeme Souness, after Souness received a phone call purporting to be from Liberian international and former FIFA World Player of the Year, George Weah. "Weah" told Souness that Dia was his cousin, had played for Paris Saint-Germain, and had played 13 times for his country. Actually, none of this was true, and the phone call was made by a fellow university student of Dia's to Souness, suggesting that he should give Dia a chance with the Saints. Nonetheless, Souness was convinced, and signed Dia on a one-month contract.

Dia played just one game for Southampton, in the number 33 shirt, against Leeds United on 23 November 1996; he had originally been scheduled to play in a reserve friendly against Arsenal, but the match was cancelled due to a waterlogged pitch. In the match against Leeds, he came on as a substitute for Matthew Le Tissier after 32 minutes, but his performance was spectacularly below Premier League quality. He was later substituted (for Ken Monkou) after playing for 53 minutes; Leeds won the match 2–0.

Is this what we like to see or what we think should happen?

What I would like to happen:

Manchester United
In: Javi Martinez, Martin Zeman, Douglas Costa, Igor Akinveev, Connor Wickham, Cahill, Baines.
Out: Berbatov, Evans, Gibson, Brown, O'shea, PIG, Park.

What will actually happen:
Manchester United
Ins: Stekelenberg, Ralphe Varane, some obscure left winger.
Outs: Van der Sar.

More of a wish list really

Arsenal

In Benoit Tremoulinas, Willian, Karim Benzema, NEW DEFENSIVE COACH

Out Eboue, Clichy, Diaby, Denilson, Arshavin (sorry my furry little meerkat but you're too inconsistent).

United

In: De Gea, Creative midfielder (maybe someone like Defour), holding midfielder, central defender (preferably someone who can cover left/right back as well)

Out: VdS, Scholes (both retire), Brown (contract expires?), Gibson, Berbatov, PIG

No seriously - Benzema is utter tripe. I've watched and laughed at him all year. Very much a confidence player (when he gets a tap in) which we don't need.

Can't think of many others that Wenger would actually go for, apart from 12 year olds from the Barca academy. Gignac is another French striker who has a crap record, cant think of many EPL strikers that I'd want, that he would buy. Do you think Benzema has no confidence because he doesn't get much chance at Madrid? At Lyon he was very much one of the star players and probably got a lot of gametime contributing to good form, looks like his Madrid record is a goal every three games or so. Lyon was 43 goals in 112 apps so yeah, maybe not too great but alongside a player like van Persie he could come good. Depends on the price I'd say, we need a good striker though other than van Persie. Bendtner gets no chances and when he gets a look in it's just him being chucked on the wing and Chamakh is like the forgotten man.

A lot would hinge on whether we lose Bendtner or not, don't forget we also have Vela and JET out on loan. I don't see us getting a new forward at all. Which is a pity because we'll no doubt lose RvP in the September international friendly again.

Vela's brother plays in Mexico with stats of P58 S7. Doesn't seem like a very talented family.

I hope we keep Bendtner, I've only seen a few Cardiff games and JET has been dire, he just doesn't run, I've seen him play a few games as a left midfielder and he's like a tall Arshavin. :/

The two main questions are, why would we need another striker, and why would you get rid of Arshavin.

Inconsistant, he's not taken a serious injury, Nasri has had several, he's our highest assisting player after Fabregas. He's only inconsistant in that, in games RVP goes missing or drops into midfield, he doesn't produce goals. His last two appearances have been widely criticised despite doing a heck of a lot of defensive work and there were FAR worse performance on the pitch in both games.

He's not even close to one of our most inconsistant players, he's been overall, taking into account availability, assists, goals, defensive duties, easily our MOST consistant midfielder.

Striker, first 19 games of the season 36 points, 39 goals scored, RVP didn't score. From Jan 1st, RVP has scored 17 goals, but in 18 games we've got 31 points, scored 31.

In other words, we were actually more successful with Chamakh upfront, unlike RVP he was more willing to stay forwards, more willing to stay on the defenders shoulder, better at winning the ball upfront and better at holding it up.

It shouldn't be a complete surprise that Nasri, Arshavin, Walcott, Bendtner, Wilshire, Song, Fabregas all scored more, or infact all their goals before xmas.

Infact, Wilshire, Song, Fabregas, Bendtner and Chamakh haven't scored a single goal in the league since RVP scored his first goal on Boxing day.

Basically, should RVP be our loan striker, not even slightly, did the team both score more goals, and get more points when RVP wasn't playing, yes, thats with strikers we already have.

I've said for over 2 years, RVP does not work as a lone striker in this formation. He's scored 17 goals since Jan 1st, which is amazing, but the TEAM plays worse and thats cost the team points and goals.

In the current formation RVP fit starts, which isn't good for the team, which would mean Benzema for the bench, if we switch formation or RVP is injured, we already have MORE effective strikers begging for games.
No seriously - Benzema is utter tripe. I've watched and laughed at him all year. Very much a confidence player (when he gets a tap in) which we don't need.

Yup, almost all of his goals are tap ins, nothing pretty much anyone else could do, and in the games where Ronaldo hasn't stepped up, or Ozil/Di Maria, Benzema hasn't been a reliable forward.

Considering the wage he'll be on at Real and what he'd want where ever he moves, he'd be a ridiculous waste of cash.

You're not the only one saying that the team doesn't work with a lone striker. It's incredibly frustrating to see young, talented players like Bendtner get 20 minutes at the end of a game on the right wing, it's retarded. And I'm sorry but I disagree with Arshavin, he's an excellent player but not on the left wing, and yes he's scored a few and assisted on a lot of goals, but the stats don't tell the whole story, only when they fit in with your arguments DM.

After researching Benzema I agree with you and Greenlizard though, seems like he'd be an epic waste of money.

I'd noticed that when RvP's scoring spree came about. If our defence was solid we'd have done very well in those games but sadly not. Too much of our play goes through him, and as talented as he is, he's not Theirry Henry.

However, have we done worse by your stats? I don't think you can apply them here, they're very similar and as is typical in our early season form will only be better thanks to a huge victory, e.g. Blackpool.

As for Arshavin I'd still love to see him play behind the striker. However with 5 players in midfield, 4 of them small* usually he needs to track back. I just don't think a guy that age is going to adapt his game to it - he hasn't got any extra fitness a younger person would.

It's annoying, but glass half full we have to be grateful he did the job the transfer fee was paid for years ago. He was got to get us into Europe and he helped us with that.

*It's this mismatch that is the problem. Small players can easily survive the EPL - however they need big lads around him. Not lanky tall, but big guys. The side as a whole is lightweight.
