why so many reports of ssd drives dissapearing?

This was OC's response:
"I am sorry to hear there is a problem with the item, as this is over 28 days old you will need to RMA the item directly with the manufacturer themselves. Please visit the manufacturers website and fill out the RMA request and they will cover the item under warranty for you if there is a fault with the item

This is giving me 2nd thoughts on where to buy my Z68 + cpu. OC are letting themselves down fobbing off RMA's to the manufacturer especially for urgently needed boot drives...

+1 i hate to say it but i wouldnt buy from OC'ers again if they fobbed me off with this either...

My OCZ ssd drive just vanished from windows and bios, only way i could get it to show up was with a jumper.

Then it showed up as being twice the size it really was, contaced ocz rma time had a new one a week later.

Well, you should have just refused to go down this route. Under the Sale of Goods act you have a one year warranty with the retailer. They may try to push you to deal with the manufacturer direct, but you are under no obligation to do so.

+1 the retailer has responsibility for the first year of warranty

But all the retailer will do is sent the faulty item back to the manufacturer and then sent it back to you when they receive it back...

My OCZ disappeared just before the 28 day cut off, so got the RMA. Not buying an OCZ drive again. If i ever go back to SSD then it'll be an Intel one, never heard of anyone having problems with them

I have received replacements before sending the hardware, and have received replacements within a day of the retailer receiving the faulty item. It all depends on the company you're dealing with.

There are of course some manufacturers that I deal with directly as I know their returns are excellent such as Seagate and Logitech.

overclockers rma does really make you want to go else where and now the company i use just sends you a brand new replacement after they test your faulty item no waiting a month to get it replaced.

i regret buying me vertex 60gb from OC'ers now :(

I had this problem with a corsair drive, it is a faulty drive problem that affects a percentage of yields, and they they did swap it out for a working on.

That said, of the 2 SSDs i have purchased, BOTH are currently dead ducks.

I wouldnt even buy an ssd they have small capacity and are over priced and people always complain about them.

Your really missing out, probably the best upgrade you can make to a computer these days.

Zero hassles with my Intel's. Hoping to try a Vertex 3 at some point although reliability is a concern.

I have had an OCZ Vertex 2 120GB for nearly 7 months. A few days ago I was getting lots of I/O errors in the event log. Eventually it would get to the stage where it would boot into windows but soon lock up and BSOD the system.
I put it in another machine to test it as a none boot drive where it would last about 3 minutes before dropping off the system (although I did manage to get my essential data copied off). So I raised an RMA which took a few days to come through. At this point I could not upgrade the firmware or secure erase using the toolbox from OCZ.
Knowing that my drive would be shipped somewhere to repair/swap out I thought that I better attempt to erase the data, so with the PC on and booted I connected the drive to a SATA cable and power. For some reason this first let me secure erase and also update the firmware from 1.23 to 1.33.
The drive has been fine now for 3 days. A new OS has been installed and so far so good. Not sure if it will last but I can't see any evidence of any bad issues so far.

One's thing for sure OCZ are giving SSD's a really bad name, no matter how wonderful an upgrade it is, it's worthless if it dies on you
