Wii U

stuck in the 90s much?

Um, no?

Don't know about that. In one of those trailers. The way that the sword cuts thru somebody, rips open the flesh and blood spurts out. Is not something I see much in Nintendo software. Maybe Nintendo are coming of age and addressing the adult players content needs.

I certainly hope so. The whole Wii theme was just horrible, I don't like them at all.

Not sure if it's been posted or even proven as fake yet but I read you can only have one of those controllers per console? Hopefully that's something that will change because that's pretty annoying.

Fairly sure that's been discussed in this very thread. I'm not interested in this console at all, I was excited for the Wii and that was terrible so I'll just wait and see.

Have they mentioned anything about their online service? Is it still going to be terrible friends codes or are they going to have a decent online service now?

Nintendo would need to secure an exclusive COD to get people to buy it over just playing it on the PS360 though. COD gamers don't seem to care that much about graphics else they'd all be moaning about it not even being 720p most of the time. Unless its Exclusive then they'll just stick with their existing platform for that particular franchise.

I agree to some extent. I'm struggling to put my thoughts into writing here, but it's something along the lines of getting the big names on the console as a signal of intent. If they can, and the games are better on the Wii U as a result of graphics, control input (dare I say online system - unlikely) etc, then I think it has a strong future personally.

I'd take a risk of owning the Wii U version of CoDx (if the online is in place) because I can see the potential value of the control methods the Wii U version could have etc.

I suppose I'm an oddity in that I actually enjoy using the motion controls for FPS games. I'm a million miles better, for example, on KZ3 with the Move than I am with the pad and I don't think KZ3 has implemented the controls as well as Metroid on the Wii.

The question is going to be who is this system aimed at and why would people buy it?

I own a Wii, as does my brother and my mother in law. None of us will buy the Wii U for one reason or another. It's obviously a minute sample but it does raise the question of how many people who bought a Wii within the last few years are going to go and drop another 200+ on another Wii platform so soon? I've lost count of the amount of people I've spoken to who bought a Wii with all the hype and never play the damned thing. That surely can't bode well for the brand.

I don't think 'casuals' are worried if they haven't played their Wii for 6 months. That's just the nature of their ownership. I think some that feel had their fingers burnt won't bother, but then I expect others that never got on board with with Wii might give this a go.

It's no doubt going to be great for the fans of Mario and Zelda and so on, but the casuals that bought the Wii are going to need some compelling reason to buy another. And the "Hardcore" is going to need to see some massive exclusive 3rd party titles to tempt them away from the PS360 they already own.

Are there many exclusive 3rd party titles left? Genuine question. I can think of Uncharted, God/Gears of War (are these 1st/2nd party though?)... Aren't most now by 1st party? Nintendo are pretty good in this respect, but then Zelda / Mario etc aren't everyone's cup of tea. /EDIT: Dealbreaker for most I think is who of their friends is buying it and what console. Exclusive DLC? Preferred control input?

I completely see you point of view, but I've enjoyed Nintendo consoles since my NES in 1990. I think for Nintendo the Wii was a massive success, but for a lot of gamers was disappointing. I see this as a chance for Nintendo to claw some of it back.

I think one of the main problems it will have is the name, they shouldn't have wii in the title. Your average joe public are not going to know it's a new console, the same problem as the 3ds, most non gamers (dont read game sites) I know aren't even aware the 3ds is a new console, they think it's just a ds with 3d.

It could cause confusion with buying titles, especially for parents and the not so savvy.

If you buy a Wii U game and it doesn't work on the Wii, that's going to be a real annoyance.
Not so much of an issue the other way around though.

I'm fairly sure you're overstating these issues.

Playstation > 2 > 3
Xbox > 360

Hardly different?

I do see what you're both saying (PS3 does seem a logical upgrade), but it's not as if the consoles release won't be without a hefty advertising campaign.

Dumb people do dumb things, regardless of name I'd suggest...

Confirmed: just one controller per console.

There's really nothing at all going for the Wii U that will see a repeat of the runaway sales that its predecessor saw. There's no accessibility, there's no mass market appeal and there's no low price point (this is virtually guaranteed, just look at the hardware), and the games are no longer unique - we are looking at dangerously high levels of ports of existing 360/PS3 games, along with the usual Nintendo reruns of their popular franchises that still don't appeal to the mass-market. The Wii U is a very confused, schizophrenic console - who is it aiming for?

I firmly stand by my opinion that this has a significant chance of looking rather tame compared to the smashing success of the original Wii - even the 3DS has had a lacklustre start, with sales well below what the DS and even the original PSP was.

Nintendo reached the peak with the Wii, but there's only one direction left to go from there and it's definitely not 'up'.

People are used to a higher number for a new console, you start adding things like u and and people get confused. Also the xbox and ps3 looked a lot different to the earlier models, the wii u looks very much like a wii, people are going to think that it's just the controller that is new. Not saying it will happen but I wont put much faith in the good ol british public I'm afraid.

Regarding the one Tablet per system, off the bat its a bit shocking however (this is a generalisation based on myself and my friends who are gamers) I dont feels its much of an issue for me personally. I play a lot of multiplayer games online that apart from Halo dont require me to have more than one pad, this might be the same for other people too.

Its been a long time since I sat and played a 4 player game with 3 other friends in the room, since I got in to playing online it no longer means I have to have my friends around to play multiplayer, back in the days of the N64 when you needed friends then this would be a massive deal, now not soo much.

This does mean that Nintendo have to actually produce and put in place a really good online system for multiplayer.

In terms of casual gamers and gamers who buy mariokart and super smash bros etc then the multiplayers will* continue to use the Wii Motes, thats fine for those who have spent money on multiples and its good for Nintendo because it means it continues to sell the peripherals.

However the local multiplayers will always more than likely be casual or simple games that require the wii mote at the very least.

I suppose what im trying to say and this is a horrible generalisation is that for those who want "hardcore" games, these "core" gamers arent going to be bothering about sitting playing 4 player. The games released will all be single player, co op would have to be online and for these "core" titles the multi would be online like the majority of games again going back to my previous point about having to bring out the online A game.

* Going by the One tablet per system.

my goodness, it looks good from that vid.

I think the same as you though, I don't know what market it's aiming at. Surely the "gotta have it" geek like me won't be enough people to sell to. However from the examples in that vid it seems like it's trying to be the "Apple" of consoles, with the cool "flicking" pictures to the TV etc. Looks just brilliant imo

That's a very good point.

Nintendo have always been very poor with their naming choices.

Take the DS Lite for example. For anyone in the "know" it means the consoles lighter but to anyone not in the gaming circle like my mother for example she thought it was a bottom of the range version and nearly ended up buying a fat DS.

And as you've said with the 3DS, why did they bother putting the DS moniker on it!? Stupid. To someone who doesn't know much about the console it's just a DS with 3D not an entirely new console that is vastly more powerful.
