Got an interview on Tuesday, Do you do this?

Afew years back when I was on the dole I went to an "interview techniques" meeting. I havent had to do an interview in a while now as the company im at now just took me on (previous employment).

One of the pieces of advice to secure the job was type up a letter to the interviewer saying "thanks for the opertunity etc" and leave it at reception after you have finished the interview.

Has anyone ever done this? It sounds really lame but if it works then who cares!

No. It's wierd. It also suggests you pre-planned to say the job sounded perfect for you and really interesting, before you were even at the interview to find out about the job!! Which could be interpreted as deceit!!!

I wouldn't, I would just thank them for the opportunity verbally at the end of the interview when you shake their hands good bye.

Definitely this.

I haven't interviewed many positions, but if you were borderline, this would get you dropped instantly from any selection process I was running.

Never chase, makes you sound desperate. I've never re-considered someone because they hassled me back via email/letter. If I'm interested in someone or not, they'll get feedback.

If someone left me a letter, I'd come on somewhere like here and say "Some dork left me a letter!!"

I sent a "Thank you for your time, I hope to hear from you soon" card to the interviewer for a job I really wanted...

... I work there now ;)

It's not the be-all and end-all... but it's a little something that helped me stand out.

It wouldn't have made a blind bit of difference if I hadn't interviewed well and done a lot of research about the company...

What position / type of company?

Haven't.
Wouldn't. Ever.

This TBH. I have nothing but contempt for HR people who interview me when they've never done the job themselves. I prefer to be interviewed by a manager who at least has some some experience of the vacancy.

If I was interviewed by an HR person who turned me down for the job, I'd send them a latter saying "IT'S YOUR LOSS!" :p

Never heard of doing that before. Some people like to follow the interview up with an email, but not sure about the typed letter.

What's with the correspondence saying thanks for the interview, after you've left the interview? To scared to say "Thanks for your time" as you shake hands to leave? :p

I am a manager for a team, and when required i have to recruit staff.

From a personal point of view, the letter will do nothing, i will skim it, then trash it.

What matters is the the CV.

If your CV has the relevant skills, and i based on this i think you are up to the job, then you get an interview.

If you get an interview, them i'm fairly confident you can do the job, and from then on its just a question if I like you or not, and if i don't like you then, i'm afraid all the letters in the world wont help.

Slightly different, but i wrote "thankyou for your time" type letters, "it was interesting to see"..blah blah blah.. For both my last two interviews. I wrote them the evening of the interview, and tried to get them there for first thing the next day.

I made no attempt to resell myself, but just thought it would be a nice touch to thank someone for the opportunity of the interview, and see how the company works.

I got both jobs;)

It is lame, as someone who has interviewed a lot of people in their time, you know potential candidates after about 10-15 minutes into the interview, a letter left on reception would do nothing to influence this apart from make me think the applicant was a suck up.
