The other players are really good - but its Messi that makes them remarkable

Ie without Messi .....and obviously another player instead, I just wonder how good they would really be

Surely 90%+ of their attacking play is through him

Well it's not like he did that good a job with Argentina single handed. Infact he was pretty unremarkable. I'd say it's the quality of the players around him that creates the space for him to work.

I really don't think the current Barca team would be struggling too much without him and say Etoo as he was before or another top goal scorer.

I haven't seen much of Jones but almost everyone would disagree with your opinion on him tbh

Not sure why you've brought Rodwell up either as he's a midfielder, there seems to be this myth that he can play both midfield and centre half yet AFAIK he's never played the latter for Everton's first team, likewise the stories of Jones being able to play midfield, I'm willing to bet he's been bought with being a long term centre half in mind not as a viable long term midfielder

No reason why at the end of the transfer window we wont have both Jones and Rodwell tbh

He used to play CB for Evertons Youth team and I think for england at youth level, moyes has always said the plan was to move him to CB eventually.

I think he will end up playing CB or DMF they just didn't fancy chucking such a young kid into the heart of our defense right now. Ability wise anyone buying him needs to be looking at those areas for him to eventually fit into.

If memory serves me right you're not a fan of Rodwell's are you?

Yeah I am, but not to the point that we should turn down anything around the money I keep seeing banded about. He has potential but no one really knows where yet.

That potential in my opinion is far to risky for a top 4 club to take a risk on right now for the money we would want.

I was upset to lose rooney for £25m, I was happy to lose Lescott for anything over 5m, I was happy to get whatever we got for Pienaar. I'd be over the moon with £15m for Rodwell.

We have to keep taking the money and selling to teams that seem unable to take a player for 3/4/5 million and turn him into their own £15-20 million player. That's just a fact of being at everton right now. Look at Baines, people are interested in him. Let him go for some of the stupid money quoted. We bought him for about 6m and for well over a season it looked like he was going to be shown the door. Now someone wants to give us crazy money for him on the back of a good year and a bit. Just so we can buy another 3m player and have him to the same standard in 12 months.

The only player I'd be sad to lose is Cahill. One of the best buys we have ever had. Arteta is quality but has been poor this year after the injuries.

Looks like Adam should complete his move to Liverpool within the week and there's the odd rumour that Meireles could be sold.

It's only a small rumour at the moment and it could simply be journos putting 2 and 2 together (with us now having so many CM options) and coming up with 5, however I wouldn't be overly surprised if he did go.

Although he had a great first 2 months under Dalglish, I always got the impression that Dalglish doesn't fancy Meireles. I don't think Meireles played CM once under Dalglish; he was either off the front or more often on the right - even when Gerrard was injured the easy answer would have been Carroll, Suarez, Maxi and Kuyt as your front 4 and then Meireles and Lucas in the middle but he prefered to play Meireles on the right and Spearing played instead.

I've always been in 2 minds about Meireles. Like Maxi, when the team are playing well and have a lot of possession - with his movement and passing, he's excellent but in games when we're not on top, he can go missing. If he is seen as expendable by Dalglish then I wouldn't be shocked if he was sold seeing as he's 1 of a few players that would demand a sizable fee and he's at the age where it's probably the last chance to get that decent fee.

Ideally you'd keep him but it all depends on the clubs plans for who we're looking to bring in and how much we're going to have to spend.

That was the story that was run but there were no direct quotes saying that. The only quotes I can remember were Meireles saying he would sign a contract for life (or words to that effect) if it was offered to him. Given that Cecil was running things back then, I wouldn't bet against the stories being true; he promised so much to the likes of Masch, Torres and Reina.

From a business point of view, at 28 his transfer value will only drop here on in and despite the contract stuff in the press, I'm sure he's on decent money too. But he'll only go if either Dalglish doesn't want him or feels the money from him can be used to improve the squad.

It's only a small rumour at the moment though.

I never said Barca would struggle without Messi

Messi may have only scored one against Utd in the final but he had crucial touches and /or an assist with the other two

They would still be a very good team , but I just dont think they would be above everyone else in the top tier of the game, more of an equal footing

To be fair - surely only Spain and Germany as national teams are better than the sum of their parts (ie very good / excellent players playing even better).

Even Brazil are better apart, or dont hit the heights they maybe should do as a team, so imo the Argentina team is more "proof of the rule" rather than an exception that proves it as it were

I'd be gutted if we sold Meireles to bring in Adam. He was probably our second best player last season behind Lucas.

Barca do struggle without Messi, their game is excellent but they need him to finish moves off. When he's injured it's like watching a different team, they have half of the threat and the games usually end up as dull 1 - 0's with Barca having only a few chances.

As said above, they wouldn't be the greatest team we've ever seen without Messi, they'd be up there with the top teams of today but no more. Messi makes them special

Worst thing Barca did selling Etoo

Yep, they've thrown over £100m into replacing him (Ibra + Villa) and both replacements have been about half as good as Eto'o at best. Not sure why he was sold, but in terms of on the field replacements, Barca have done extremely poorly.
