Bit coincidental but LFC have dropped their last pre season friendly to make time to play Valencia at Anfield..
Rumours going around that its something to do with the potential Mata deal.

Well i hope it means its to sign Mata but it could also just be that its to face a bigger team to prep ourselves more.

If it means its part of the deal for Mata maybe he plays one half for us and 2nd half for them like Hernandez did to give him a farewell so to speak

Exactly which friendly has been dropped? The latest confirmed friendly we've got is the 1st August and this is said to be on the 6th.

I know its Saturday so news is generally a bit slow but has there been any development with Sanchez picking a suitor?

Barcelona.

And good news on Modric wanting to go to Chelsea, United can do better, lets hope Fergies pride accepts that and doesnt get us dragged into an expensive bidding war over him.

Different sites claim that Barca, United and City are all gonna sign him so who knows  Don't think we will get either Sneijder or Modric as well, Fergie will probably sign someone like Charlie Adam

Those that are saying they dont want United to sign Modric, I'd love to know who they think is better and crucially actually available

Hamsik, as far as I know he's at some middling Serie A side and can remember him being mentioned earlier in this thread...

So you obviously dont know much about him if you dont know what club side he plays for but you prefer him to Modric anyway

I know who he is, where he's from, that the past few summers he's been linked with moves away to larger clubs, and is meant to be one of the best 'under-the-radar' midfielders in Europe... just because I didn't want to guess his club (it's Napoli by the way) since I couldn't remember anything other than what their jersies looked like (light blue) doesn't mean I don't know what I'm talking about...

...but then again I'm going in a dissenting line in a conversation with you Tom, obviously I must be delusional or ignorant.

Well without meaning to be rude you obviously dont know what you're talking about seeing as the bulk of your argument there is hearsay

Have you actually seen him play say 10 times?

Without wanting to sound rude here Tom, I think you're trying to find a way to argue against something you actually have no idea about yourself. Why not try actually saying something substantive rather than just 'well you might not be totally right...'. I have said he is considered promising. Okay. I said he has been linked away from his team in the past. Okay. He was even co-owned at one point. Okay. If any of those are too 'out there' for you, why not just say so...

I've seen him play Fiorentina a couple of times, as that's the only team I'd really follow with interest in Italy.

Just Google him for God's sake, just because I don't want to lead you by the hand on a play-by-play of his life since birth doesn't mean it's my responsibility to hold your hand on basic information about him. Google is your friend.

Erm..... I asked if anyone knew an available alternative to Modric whom many dont seem to want United to sign, all you've done is proceeded to name 1 player who you're read this and that about.

So no I'm not simply going to agree with you about Hamsik and that's not because I've never seen him play but it's pretty clear you actually know next to nothing about him yourself other than what you've read.

As for your comment about Googling him yes because that Football Manager and Youtube are the best ways of identifying players aren't they.

I suggest you take that stick out of your arse and either choose your words more wisely when you reply to someone on this forum (without the teenage attitude) or simply dont reply at all.

Now if a grown up that's actually got a suggestion of someone they've actually seen play (you know in actual games of football) and not just youtube clips by all means put me in my place and prove there are better alternatives out there and I'll be happy to learn that Modric isn't the be all and end all

Cheers :)

You really must think a lot of yourself to pull out that indignation after pulling out the 'ignorance' card the second someone suggested a name and not immediately tagging his name to a club that didn't spring to mind immediately in a spate of honesty.

Also apparantly enough of a fan of yourself to completely ignore what I've said about how I learned what I have about him (apparantly having replied that I have watched him play meant 'I read about him in a dusty tome in a candle-lit basement') and insinuate that I glean my information from Youtube and a computer game I don't have (says leaps and bounds how often you're the first to bring this up in your regular 'spates')

Given that you can't engage with someone on their ideas without insulting them, sticking words in their mouth, or a whole host of other mental gymnastics, what age does that make you mate?

It really is pointless to try and drag this on further, you haven't referred to anything other than me in a conversation about a player, and I do notice you have a habit of ****ing all over the walls whenever someone 'dares' disagree with your condescending self.

*Edit: Oh, and also while I'm at it - "you know nothing other than what you read"... what the hell? I take it you replying in this to reports about Modric is based on your personally phoning Redknapp and Luka then Tom? I'm getting headaches even trying to think about that one...

I personally don't believe Utd need to sign a 'creative' midfielder as such. There is no question we DO need another central midfielder but I don't believe he needs to be completely of the creative mold. As has been said Modric is a deeper laying playmaker, he gets the ball deep and links up the play, much like Carrick is supposed to do. Sneijder looks for the space between the opposition's midfield & defense, which is a good player to have, IF your team is set up to play via 1 main playermaker. Barcelona for example have both types of player in Xavi & Iniesta (Xavi playing deeper) but they don't focus on just 1 of them to create. The constant movement of the front 3, and having someone like Messi who can't make things happen means they don't need to rely on a playermaker as such all the time.

In no way am I comparing them, but Rooney in essence is Utd's Messi. When that extra bit of finess and guile is needed he can provide it. This season we won the league and reached the CL final to only be beaten by in my eye's the best team in Europe by far. That was all done without Modric/Sneijder. We have creativity in many area's of the team, and the eventual (I hope) signing of Young will only add to that and he's not a central midfielder.

Obviously the team needs improved, and as I said a CM is a must purchase, but I don't think we need to have a player of 1 main discipline (defensive minded/attacking etc).

I think a ball-winning midfielder would actually be of far more use to United than a creative one. For me, the most balanced midfields in recent years have been the likes of Milan and Barcelona, to use some Football Manager terminology: :p

Gattuso (Defensive Mid)
Pirlo (Deep Lying Playmaker)
Seedorf (Attacking Mid)

Busquets (Defensive Mid)
Xavi (Deep Lying Playmaker)
Iniesta (Attacking Mid)

At United we haven't played with three genuine midfielders all year, as Rooney has lined up as our attacking midfielder. In Carrick we have a player in the mould of Xavi/Pirlo (note I'm not suggesting he's as good before any muppets say I am) but we don't have an effective defensive player to play alongside him. I think our strongest system is 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-1-1 but we need someone with some balls to play alongside Carrick and impose themselves on the game. That is not Sneijder or Modric.

Tom, any midfielder out side of our or top 3 rivals, plus Barcelona and Madrid I would say are available.

Modric is no more available to us than any other player, so saying we can do better isnt as outlandish as you think.
