TF2 gone free to play

The attitude on OcUK is absolutely horrible. I don't know why I even look in TF2 threads anymore.

It's always like this when something changes. People are scared ****less of change. How on earth can you babble and moan when the update is just a few hours old and now you have all kinds of 'experts' crawling out from under rocks and bridges claiming the game is 'ruined'. You'd think one of the most legendary and HIGHLY respected development companies would know what their doing and taking all the fears, justifiable or not, into consideration BEFORE making such a move.

I'll bet on Valve rather than hysterical squealing trolls. But then again, most only do it because everyone else is doing it. In reality they have no clue. They just like the sound of their own irritating voices.

They're making money, as simple as that.

TF2 is one of the most updated games for the past few years from what I can see and putting money into that has to give something back.

Most players have already purchased TF2 so making it a F2P seems like a decent move business-wise.

Micro-transactions are the way to go in this age of online gaming, people are willing to spend a pound here and a pound there totalling to a handful of pounds each month/year because that's how the DLC content has been fed to use for years of the current generation consoles.

Mind you, I don't play TF2 nor do I have anything against this move or Valve :)

And that's fine, I have zero issues with Valve trying to spin a buck as long as it's not intrusive or force me to spend money too to stay competitive. If people want to spend a pound or two buying stupid hats or new guns then that's up to them.

I played earlier this morning and the servers was rife with people bitching and moaning about 'F2P noobs'. Just played again for an hour and nobody is even mentioning it any more. Usually knee-jerk overreaction from a loud and stupid minority. Suddenly when everyone realised that NOTHING has changed since yesterday apart from more players (and servers now) about and a few new silly hats, everyone was quiet again.

Well, until Valve 'ruins' the game again with another update.

TF2 has been available for a long time now, anyone who has any sort of interest in this game would have already purchased it long ago.

By making it free to play Valve are introducing not only an excellent game to people but also their Steam client. People may grow to like it and end up spending money at the store.

And that's not including the TF2 store, if the game is free people are more inclined to spend money on in-game items, Trackmania for example?

Win, win for Valve.

I hope this does wonders for the comp scene of the game!

It could go both ways, but if i was to put money on it I'd say it would do good.

Previously the game had about 15-20,000 people playing, after the first day of the game becoming free it's now at 70,000. Surely the bigger the player base the better the comp scene?

Was playing this free couple of days ago, just tried it now, but cant see any servers!

funny you should mention that, same here. Just thought our internet was having a spazz as that does happen from time to time, but it usually fixes itself in about 10 minutes.

On the other hand, i can still see/join favorites and history...

It's still the same bloody brilliant game it always has been, 90% of the fun factor for this game is finding the right server and the right people to play with. I've had some of the biggest laughs of my gaming life playing this game, and made some good real life friends too. And if anyone can point me out any other team based hat simulators of this maturity and variety I'd like to hear about it.

I for one welcome our new free loading friends and hope they find and partake with some of the great communities out there. Now, what hat should I colour with this pink paint.
Well said. I have a few mates who don't own TF2 now and now it's free I'm gonna get them to DL it, the more tbe merrier. :)

No doubt they had to restrict free accounts from being able to trade items because you can guarantee the instant this was announced, some people were off to create duplicate Steam accounts so they could afk multiple instances on servers to get items.

Think i saw my first cheater today, he was a demoman with that charge/rush thing he did it three times in a row one after the other, is that legit or?

Probably legit, either quite good or just lucky.

Hackers are more likely to be triggerbotting all over the place as a scout.

Unless you're a Spy imo, because without the various watches to cater for different situations you won't be able to adapt to the situations on the maps.

That and I don't understand how the ambassador has a downside if you can aim for the head :p

True..

My favoured class too :), takes a while to master it anyway

Avoid servers like sains.de servers. They aren't cheater servers, but the game is heavily tweaked, it's more like quake 3

Sweet, I'll be playing this now it's free. I never bothered before as none of my mates played it as we were all stuck into MMOs :D
