PC died - Trying to figure out which part is broken - Advice needed please

Ouch your not having much luck with this!

Have you checked monitor cable or tried it on your projector?

Have you tried each stick of ram on there own in new mobo?

Edit/ Remove that competitor ;)

What's the new mobo, and does it have on board gfx?
I'd also try with 1 stick of ram (twice) as I've seen some not beep without memory in.

I'm a little concerned as to what's causing the significant increase in temperature over time, usually all you need to do is some dust removal and perhaps replace the fan. Replacing the heatsink isn't normally required, but it sounds like the 'new' one is having the same issue?

When you moved the CPU to the new mobo, did you happen to take a look at the underside, any discolouration at all?

Ok I'll try without any ram, and then try one stick at a time, I got 4 in total, and then I'll try the old PSU too.

As for what you asked about the CPU, am not sure ya know, I usually do have my PC on 24/7 all year long, my room gets quite hot also, and also quite dusty although I do try to dust my room atleast once a week because I got asthma. I think all the hardware attracts dust quite badly. Might have to buy one of those air canisters I saw before at some point, think they have compressed air to spray inside your PC, sounds good.

Also when I buy a new rig later this year am thinking about learning about water cooling and doing all that so that I never have overheating problems ever again. And then in future I'll always have CPU and GFX water cooled.

What competitor? Comfused...

As to your questions, yes mate, am talking to you on projector now, I got webpage on my wall, 100" am outputting from laptop.

And yeah I tried to output PC through projector also.

I know monitor works because I'm outputting xbox 360 to it as we speak.

As for ram, gona try that this second. ;)

Sorry if I'm being slack at all, very tired, feel like am in a coma, if ya know what I mean, not sure if you heard that expression before haha.

Ok sounds good...

The competitor you mentioned which you purchased your new parts from....

Am sure your allowed to mention names, just not post websites, I see people mention names loads of times on this site...think that rule only applies to links, which is why I didnt put the URL in...

Managed to get some more cash anyways so I can go town tomorrow and get a CPU instead of waiting til monday.

EDITED previous post just incase am wrong.

Ok going to bed now, I been trying every possible combination I can, I've tried turning it on with no ram, or one stick at a time, one hard drive at a time or no hard drive, no gfx no sound, no nothing, it does exactly same thing no matter what I do, just turns on, lights come on, fans come on, seems like the PC is on but doesnt boot and doesnt display and doesnt beep.

I'm going to go get a CPU in morning soon as I wake up, I'll post back soon as I've installed it.

One last thing, is a duel core worse then a quad core? would I be going backwards if I get a duel core?

I currently have an "Intel Q8200 socket 755 2GHZ at stock speed" and the one I been looking at getting tomorrow is "Intel Cel Dual Core E3400 S775 2.6GHz" for £35, so would that CPU be worse or better, it looks faster to me, but then I dont know if 2 cores will suck compared to 4 in games like BC2 etc?

when I check out all the sites and shops in town, the duel cores start around £35 which is around my budget but the quad cores start at over £100.

Thanks in advance.

Your not going to believe this mate, got up today, went town, bought a new CPU, come home, installled it, turned on PC, still not working.

So right now in my PC I 've got a new motherboard, a new PSU, and a new CPU, I tried with one stick of ram at a time, and one hard drive at a time, tried different sata cables for hard drives.

Tried with onboard graphics card as well as my normal ATi HD 5770 1GB.

I even started thinking surely I've tried everything in the case, so took PC out of room with monitor and tried it in a different room incase it was dodgy power supply in this room or something.

This totally makes no sense to me, am so confused can you guys possibly think of anything else it could be or anything else I could try?

This is seriously like omg, proper nightmare, this is day 3 now as well.

Thanks in advance:mad:

If it was graphics failure you'd expect some beeps from POST.

Are the fans powered through the motherboard or Molex/Fan controller?

Do you have a case speaker? A motherboard display?

Have you tried clearing CMOS(jumper or battery removal)?

Was just reading back through the pages, I didnt reply to you, sorry, the fans are powered through the mobo, yeah the case has a speakers and I plugged wire into mobo, not sure if it works tho, dont see why it would be broken tho.

I wish there was some beeping going on to help me out or even a voice, years ago I had a mobo, and it spoke, it said no "AGP graphics card inserted" which I thought was pretty cool, and I've had past mobo's beep, so not sure why these two haven't spoken to me or beeped.

They dont beep with no gfx or no hdd or no ram, maybe the speaker isnt working. When mobo's beep do they require a case speaker to beep or is there usually something on the mobo that beeps?

I dont have any kind if display for mobo either.

I took the battery out with my old mobo to see if that did anything but didnt make a difference. Havent tried that with new mobo but will do now.

Think when I was reading the manual for new mobo it said it also has a cmos jumper. Should I take out the battery and the cmos jumper, and if so should I take both out at the same time?

Cheers.

Wow, sorry about this mate. I don't have a clue what could be causing it, you have eliminated most chances of the probable causes. Maybe it's time for a new system soon? You have only had it for 3 years though so keep going and try to work the problem out, I'm sure something will come up.

powerswitch on case?
the only thing i can think of is the case, everything else has been eliminated.

I know man, I been thinking same, after it didnt switch on with new CPU I was like, well what else is there...3 things popped in my head, the power cable, the case and the wall socket in my room.

Tried a different room tho, so that rules that out, so all thats left is the case and the power cable.

I've checked the case like 50x for lose screws or if I can see anything touching behind the motherboard, theres nothing so that just leaves the power cable.

What are the power cables called, ATX power cable? I think I could prob pick one up for £5.

Do you reckon it could be cable? If there was something wrong with cable tho, surely it wouldnt let any power through at all, coz lights and fans still come on?

EDIT: If I dont manage to fix it tonight I think am going to try take the CPU, PSU and mobo back, and try get all money back, only spent £75 for those 3 tho. And then I can put that towards a new PC...if I get a new PC I'll buy mobo/cpu/ram combo and new case + new fans/heatsinks for cpu and case.

EDIT 2: Going to gym now mate, should be back in about an hour and a half, I'll get back to work with it then and post back if any news or luck.

Thanks for help and info so far.

kettle lead normally is what people call them.
even though case looks ok, do a skeleton build to make 100% sure

Whats a skeleton build? Where you have PC running on your desk without a case? I never done that before, how does it all keep grounded and not blow up when ya turn it on, coz I thought mobo has to be touching special plate in case or sommat?

with your new mobo you should have got some red or black foam stuff, put the mobo on that, it doesnt need to earth anywhere, the psu does that for you :)

have to do it all the time at work, this was one that puzzled me

Ok mate, I'm gona do that soon as I get back from gym, cheers.

The mobo should have come with a mobo speaker

You are one unlucky guy, lol!

Can build a new PC with all the parts you got :P (apart from the fact that you returned some :P)

Tell me about it lol...I didnt want to build an old PC tho round an old spec, socket 755,...if I was gona build a new PC these days I'd got an i5 or i7 setup with duel graphics and eyefinity which is what I plan to do but thats probably 2-3 months away yet.

Just wanted this old rig to last a few more months.

Even tho I bought new mobo, cpu, psu and hdd tho I've only spent £75 so far, already taken hdd back, gona take cpu back tomorrow and mobo and psu back on wednesday.

So then I'll be back where I started with same old rig.

If I cant fix this one tho am thinking maybe trying to get £300 together to buy a mobo/cpu/ram bundle from ocuk.

Is it ok if I just put the motherboard on the box it came in, I didnt get any foam, inside the box the mobo came in like a silver-ish see through envolope/bag type thing.

I got a wooden desk, not metal.
