****The Official Samsung Galaxy S II Thread***

Has anyone upgraded to lite'ning rom 1.5 from 1.4 and noticed any benefits?

Also, would I just flash 1.5 on top of 1.4?

10hrs 57mins = 95% left

Are you actually using the phone for anything or is it just sat there? I find it hard to believe some people when talking about battery life of smart phones.

I'm down to 95% in the hour it takes me to get to work and thats with checking fb/twitter for overnight activity and listening to music the whole time on full whack with poweramp, brightness @ 30%.

Beginning to HATE Kies, all it seems to do is connect when it feels like it and take up 100% system resources. Are there any alternatives I can use?

11 hours with 0.5% drain per hour would require a well calibrated battery and virtually nothing (maybe one thing) on sync.

No use other than standby and the odd screen check at the very most, too.

lol!! I'm not someone who has the latest phone and then doesnt use it. Half the time its dead within a day, and most often than not, overnight it drains for no reason (prob bec of how many emails I get through work)

In the past I've tried things like BatteryCalibration which did great for me, but still didnt make it "brilliant" - Yesterday I changed routers as BT sent us the new one, so I assume the wifi connection on the old one must have been worse?

Other than that there's not much I can tell you. Best I've had so far (have screenshots) is just over 2days... worst I've had is less than a day so......

I'm on 1.5, no noticeable improvements that I can tell but no bugs either.

And yes, just flash with Odin over 1.4, all you're apps will remain. Do a nandroid backup first though, just in case.

So what have you actually used the phone for over those 10 hours 57 mins? With only 5% drain on the battery as Robbo said you would have surely had to do close to nothing with it.

5% in 10 hours is 0.5% per hour... when left overnight the SGS II loses an average of 0.5-0.8% per hour when it is kept in sleeping with something like Green Power installed to close the connections. You can't be using your phone much, if at all, with a drain that is supposedly less than that.

GREAT SUCCESS!!! :D

After 2 months of waiting and 2 threats to leave 3, I finally demanded my PAC code and they offerred me a "one time offer" better than I expected:

Talk 500 package at £19/m (although £18 on their site)
500 mins or texts
1000 text booster at £5/m (cancellable)
500Mb
Free S2
24 months.

I told them I was going for Affordable Mobile's Pay Monthly 25 at 25.54 so they uncut it.

Fingers crossed they won't screw me over when confirmation comes (they've got it wrong twice in 2 months on separate sim only and BB accounts so far this year, which I resolved though).

Very happy and off to find a case and screen protector...

Agreed. My phone gets put into dumb mode every night at midnight and loses 3-5% in eight hours, so I'm not sure how SB420 can manage less battery drain with 10 hours of normal usage.

The SGS2 doesn't use the stock Android dialer though.
Your post I replied to said the stock dialer doesn't do it. I was disagreeing saying it does. The one that ships with the sgs2 may not but if you put a rom with the stock dialler on it will.

As I said above, I was in bed, and Wifi is always connected.

33m conversation (12hr 40mins total battery so far) and still at 87% (and yes, most of that time I was not using the phone)

Exactly the same here Paul!

I've just done some testing.

Entry to Outlook syncs to Google Calendar and also phone.
Entry to Google Calendar syncs to Outlook and also phone.
Entry to phone syncs to Google Calendar but not to Outlook.

Google Calendar is also only syncing events to my phone calendar from 16th May 2011. Yet oddly, Google Calendar shows it's imported all my events from Outlook from 27th January 2011. Looking at Outlook, 27th January is where my events begin, so Google Calendar is exactly in line with it. Strange then why it's not syncing almost 4 months of events to my phone prior to May.

Smells of an Outlook permissions issue to me, although I could be wrong.

Outlook asked me to allow the sync app when I first used it and touch wood its been fine since....

Just picked myself up an S2 after giving up waiting on the iPhone 5 (I figure I already have an iPad, so wanted to keep the variety).

How does one go about rooting these? There doesn't seem to be the usual plethora of of guides on modaco as you have with the HTC stuff. A point in the right direction would be great :)

Secondly, are there any essential tips/flaws/hidden gems I should be aware of?

You install KIES to get the right drivers for the phone, then install ODIN, then download a pre-rooted firmware, flash it with ODIN and job done.

Look on XDA Developers for in-depth details.

If you're just looking to root, then there's guides on the XDA forums - generally, u need a copy of odin, chainfire has released hacked firmwares, put the phone into download mode after turning on usb debugging mode, then just flash that hacked firmware using odin (usual disclaimers apply ie, don't check anything other than reset time and auto reboot, and don't touch PIT, and use the PDA option for the firmware), then generally, use superoneclick to install root and busybox etc... After that reflash with stock kernel, which will keep the root stuff on the phone.

There are easier ways though depending on how much u want to customise. Just install a custom rom which come pre-rooted anyway - I'd highly recommend lite'n'ing rom, though a lot of people in this forum are happy with villian rom from what I've seen.

Oh I'd recommend getting a USB jig too, they're handy :)

I don't even use Kies at all. What are you trying to do with it? If your trying to transfer music just create a folder on the phone and then mount the phone and use windows explorer to transfer ur music or videos etc. If your trying to update the firmware just go to XDA and read up about using ODIN.

Kies covers everything though, messages, photos, music, phone logs etc. USB will only give you access to the files.

Tried MyPhoneExplorer but it won't even detect an ADB connection :(
