First car - narrowed it down to 2

Well, glad you eventually got a decent quote, always nice to get a thank you for spending part of your evening trying to help someone save a few thousand pounds, or an apology for being accused of lying whilst doing so.

Happy Motoring.

Yes, I appreciate your effort - it was the needless sniping at me (from others) that took this topic to less pleasent places.

Now you have it down to 1600, can you not also add a female famly member on? (Having my mum on still drops my insurance by over £300 and has done ever since I started driving) It is probably also worth raising your voluntary excess to the 350 / 450 mark. You may find with both of those you get it into the £1000 figure.

Despite you earlier protests to the contrary, this thread has pretty much proved that the vast majority of young drivers are, quite simply, "doing it wrong". This is why I still laugh everytime I see these ridiculous articles on the news saying "I once got a quote for £5,000". I once got a quote for £999,999.99 (modified nissan skyline for a young driver with a claim, was the most expensive result, cheapest being around 4k) Its not difficult to upset the comparison sites and spending a bit of time and a lot of fiddling can quite easily shave thousands of your price.

Awesome, postcode is an A :) and insurance on my first car was £700 with 0 years driving and 0 no claims but over 20 years old. Just accept that the first year or two of driving is going to be painfully boring.

HEY MATE, I AM TYPING IN CAPITAL LETTERS SO YOU CAN SEE THIS AND ADD A SECOND NAMED DRIVER.

THIS WILL HELP REDUCE YOUR PREMIUM FURTHER, EVEN IF IT IS JUST YOUR FRIENDS' COUSINS' AUNT AND THEY WILL NEVER DRIVE IT.

ALSO, YOU DIDN'T BLANK OUT YOUR NAMES ON THE FINAL LV SCREENSHOT. I THINK THAT IS A BIT OF A FAIL THERE MATE.

COOL BEANS MATE

on ur quote you would have only had ur license a month. Try setting it to 3 months. Knocked like 400 pounds off my girlfriends quotes

eugh. Also just followed that link to find i live in an f rating postcode.

@ Deific

Hi Deific

Did you ever actually work out exactly what it was that you were / were not doing on your applications that caused you initially to get such a high quote and subsequently with help from Kenai & Lopéz managed to get it substantially lower?

I have had a look through the entire thread but I suspect that the answer lies somewhere in the snapshots and it is a nightmare scrolling them from side to side and comparing. I am just curious and would like to know what made the difference.

Thanks :)

it was down to which insurance company he used

He hadn't quoted with LV direct before. Thats where he got the cheap quote from.

I ran his details through Admiral for the 1.25 Fiesta i posted earlier who wanted £2800.

Yeh, I've ran a few cars through it now, and it seems a lot of cars that the other companies would insure me on, even some fairly low powered cars, LV deem too powerful despite the other companies quoting the same or barely more than lesser powerful cars. However the cars they will insure me on, some are 2k+ cheaper (all of them at least 1k cheaper). Bizzarre, but I'm not complaining. I think it may be more down to the badge, and what people who own those cars have a tendancy to use them for. The BMW in my original post is apparently too powerful despite being 116bhp, but if I put in something like a 2L Volvo S40 for example which has 143bhp they quote me 1800.

The whole insurance game is bizarre tbh. I sometimes get the feeling they make it all up as they go on.

I haven't passed yet. I'm looking at just how practical (or not) moving over to a car would be financially as it's something I may have to face. It's not really enticing moving from a high performance sport bike to a fairly medicore car and having to pay double the insurance.

Keep the bike and buy a bog standard run around as your first car.

Have you looked at something like a VW Golf, something with a slightly smaller engine size. Paying a massive insurance premium to drive what is effectively a **** box isn't worth it so you might as well drive a **** box with a much more reasonable insurance premium.

Care to point out anywhere that i've failed to listen? I've replied realistically and logically to everything said here.

I think it's a matter of "how to make friends and influence people". Your attitude is completely off the wall when all people wanted to do was save you 2 grand not beat up your grandmother.

Anyway, glad you have some realistic insurance prices. Have you tried pricing insurance for a 1.6-2.0 Focus & a 1.8/2.0 Mondeo?

Well when people are screaming out to use certain insurers that I'm already using, and likening my form filling skills to that of an monkey because clearly I should be getting unobtainable premiums with those insurers, then it's frustrating. I think I was actually well reserved with some of the comments people made. It just so happens that one insurer someone mentioned after many others, did infact turn up those results.

I'm trying all different cars atm to find what what would be the most reasonable, now that a lot of cars fall under 'reasonable'.
