****The Official Samsung Galaxy S II Thread***

Why do people do that, put down a wall of text and then say "end" once they've had their rant, especially when the 'argument' had already ended many posts ago. Is it really that important to get the last word. :D

Lolol that argument went on for a while.

I will say this, I understand your point completely, you like having the newest best phone.

For me, my decision makes sense, I like to buy a phone and use it, and don't like the hassle of switching things around a lot. So 24 months at the lowest cost per month is what I look for.

I know your response is going to be:

a) New phones are cool, why not get one if you can for 'free'
b) Switching phones is no hassle.
c) Look at this combination of buying and selling phones that works out favourable, good for you.

People are different and look for different things.

I was arguing that you can't compare total cost using the methodology you suggested.

Lastly, I think your name calling is deplorable and is more telling more about your character than anything else.

Lets talk about phones :)

You're nuts.

Hello OcUK. Started having a bizarre proble with my S2, I find that my alarm isn't going off in the morning as it has either force closed or the whole system has locked up. Any ideas what might be causing this? It charges overnight by the way...

What is the latest firmware version for this phone? I got KE7 very soon after getting the phone but have had no updates since then. I know their is a "Bug" on this phone that makes the "WiFi sharing" activate itself, randomly, which eats up the battery. On other forums people are stating they have got KF2 and/or KF3 firmwares, which have possibly fixed this issue. Is this firmware only available by rooting or manually flashing? I have gone to the update section in the phone and it shows no new updates.

Also what is the difference between the Android versions (2.3, 2.3.3, 2.3.4) and all this KE7, KF2, KF3 stuff?

KE/KF (etc) are just Samsung's software versions, I'm not sure why they are named the way they are.

Android 2.3 is Gingerbread, and 2.3.3 is the version. 2.3.4 is the current version of Gingerbread, which may offer extra features and bug fixes over the previous version. Like 2.3.4 adds Google video chat, etc.

Ta,

After doing a bit more reading it seems KE7 is the official latest Samsung firmware, so KF2/3 are just for rooted phones and people who have flashed etc. Does that sound right to you?

I update only via the phone (I don't have a Windows PC so don't have access to the KIES software that can download firmware via PCs). Presumably phone and desktop software update servers get new versions simultaneously?

rp2000

I'm not sure actually, the OTA software update thing on the phone seems a bit dodgy. I've always done it via Kies.

KF3 Is available for me on Kies - still on KE7 myself.

Hmmm... Robbo, can you check what the latest one is on Kies on your PC? Kona, is yours a "generic" SGS2 or an operator branded one? If KF3 is available for generic/factory SGS2's I may go to the effort of installing KIES in a virtual machine, just to get the new firmware.

You can install it using Odin. Check the firmware thread on XDA

generic unbranded.

Unfortunately I'm abroad on my laptop at the moment so don't have Kies installed :(

I'm sure someone else can though!
No worries :)

I think that is for rooted people only, I am not really interested in rooting my phone, at present.
generic unbranded.

Thanks for checking, I am just googling and it appears there might be a Mac version of Kies now, so going to try that out. If not I will get the PC version and run in a VM. I am anxious to get KF3 to stop the WiFi sharing wasting my battery.

You don't need root for Odin, it should work fine.

Fair enough, my mistake (sorry Intratech!!). I am going to stick with Kies or OTA updates anyway. I am new to android and would prefer to stick to the "official" upgrading mechanisms, for now :)

Edit: Looks like I will have to use a PC version as the Mac one shows:

Aye, I've heard the Mac one is a bit rubbish due to issues with the drivers I believe.

There aren't many Mac owners with Android phones, let me tell you :p

LOL. I was tempted to go for an iPhone to go with my mac, just for the simplicity, but I fancied the challenge of getting an Android instead! So far it has cost me money in buying third party apps to sync iTunes to the phone and get an iPod/iPhone esque player on the phone as well :(:)
