Got no time for ****** - round my mums way they steal everything, from manhole/drain covers, to telephone wire, horse boxes/transporters, farm machinery, vehicles, stuff from the corner shop (they buy stuff with a wad of 50's, but still load up their pockets with items they have no intention of paying for). They even stole the aluminium railings on a foot-bridge over the canal in the city where I live, twice! lol.
They threaten local farmers and shopkeepers with violence and arson if they have the temerity to stand up for themselves or their property - they have gone as far as carrying out their threats of arson on several of the farmers barns and equipment.
They hunt with illegal firearms and dogs, committing armed trespass on private land.... to you and I, that is a very serious offence indeed.
They leave human faeces and nappies and all manner of other rubbish littered over grass verges and hedgerows/ditches anywhere they are not moved on from immediately.
You often see the young lads thrashing the life out of a pony in a trap to make it go faster (I don't mean urging the animal on with the whip, I mean sustained and continual whipping) I know the difference between guiding a horse and mistreating it, and they are most definitely mistreating the animal.
Recently they were involved in a fatal traffic accident outside one of their transitory camps and refused to admit any involvement - they didn't even report the accident, but just drove off and left the scene.
This litany of antisocial acts would land any of us in jail, but because they are 'ethnic innit' there appears to be some special exemption that means the police will not do anything - they'll not even enter these semi-permanent sites to recover a stolen horse transporter, even when the owners neighbour had seen them stealing it and followed them to the camp. Unless there's an arv unit or a riot van available, and even then the planets have to be in the proper alignment.
All sorts of people bang on about equality and rights. Most of these ******'* deserve none because they have absolutely no regard for anyone but themselves.
Not all gypsies are like this, but the older generation of traditional travellers who had some pride and respect for their heritage and respect for others seem few and far between, as are those other travellers who behave decently - it could be argued that you only hear about the bad stuff, and I'll readily accept that. But there's a lot of the bad stuff that has and continues to happen where I grew up.
With a reputation for behaving like I have related above, is it any wonder most people think they're scum and ostracise them?
Simple fact is many travellers don't want to settle down anywhere permanent - that would mean they have to pay tax like everyone else, get educated and have jobs like everyone else.
They don't respect the law or property or land ownership or pretty much anything everyone else values or abides by (in general terms).
I can admire their stubbornness and individuality, but not at my, or anyone else's expense. Unfortunately, their well deserved reputation precedes them most everywhere they go. Catch 22? maybe, but it doesn't stop most of the ****** I know of behaving like criminal gangs.
As for the article, well, I must admit my own prejudice there when I read the original story a short while back - my first thought was 'damn ******'. It might be that the facts of the incident make my initial appraisal unwarranted, but it wouldn't be surprising to me or anyone else who had the same thought if it were correct. That in itself is unfortunate for a good many reasons.
