BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

This one TP-Link 300Mbps High-Gain Wireless-N USB Adapter.

Is that not 30 megabytes per second for USB 2.0 ?

I just found this on USB 2.0 "When USB 2.0 introduced Hi-Speed USB mode, it boosted bandwidth to 480Mbit/s or 60Mbyte/s."

I watched the connection last night and it was fluctuating all over the place between 124mbps upto 242mbps.

This below was an actual speedtest when connected to wireless. I managed to do it when the connection was showing 242mbps.

Talk talk have messed up for the last time. Was supposed to have fibre optic installed yesterday. The BT engineer showed up (lovely chap), did everything he were supposed to do but talk talk hadn't activated our account. So we're still on ADSL.

Anyway, going to switch to BT. Do we need our MAC code? I've heard conflicting reports. Some people say as it's LLU and we'll be going back to BT we won't need one, others are saying we will.

I hope we don't because I know talk talk mess you around big time when requesting a MAC from them.

Edit - There is a MAC code on the old ADSL router supplied by talk talk. Is this the correct one?

you need to request one from talk talk if going from talk talk to BT.

Although I went from O2 to BT and did get a MAC code but BT didnt need it.

Possibly because I had to go down the option for new line (even though I didnt need a new line - long story)

The MAC you want stands for Migration Authorization Code, Whereas the MAC on network cards/routers stands for Media Access Control and is basically an address uniquely identifying that piece of hardware on a local area network.
 
I just got connected to BT Infinity today and the speeds are shocking (2mbps download speed). I was really looking forward to better speeds :( My old speeds on my old BT service were better. I'm using a wireless connection and was wondering if anyone could help offer advice?

Did the engineer not tell you what speed it would do?
IIRC they won't even sell it to you unless you'll get over 16Mb/s

They told me that it would be around 38Mb/s :(

Current speed :(


The speed is fluctuating something shocking which is strange imo. I hope the speed gets sorted soon :(

if you only have a 54mbps wireless card forget getting decent speeds. Also switch off the auto channel search and use something like Inssider to find a free wireless channel and use that.

Mine has improved a bit too since I disabled BT FON !

only way is wired !

I've disabled the auto channel search already and I haven't got BT FON enabled. I suppose the only way is wired but I doubt my mum will let me run cables to downstairs :(
