Seeing as the other Google+ thread has turned into 44 pages of invite requests and one page of actual discussion, how about a thread dedicated to discussing the merits/flaws of the new social network?

I see it a bit like the progression from Bebo to Facebook - people outgrew the childishness of Bebo and opted for the more professional Facebook network. It will take time for people to start migrating over, but I already have far more friends on it than I thought I would after just a few weeks.

Google+ is only in the beta stage at the moment, so once they open the G+ SDK to developers then I'm sure we'll see lots of nifty tools, games and other stuff.

The Circles feature is also great. It means you can compartmentalise people into groups you only want to share certain things with. A lot better than the "all or nothing" approach of Facebook imo.

I see that Facebook has just announced a video chat option too. Is this a direct result of Google+ offering the same service?

*First person to request an invite gets lynched and has their email address spammed incessantly!*

Can i haz a invIt3?

Don't, I'm already using the service.

As I only have a few friends on there at the moment, compared to around 300 on facebook, its hard to make a decent comparison. I think if everyone used both, G+ would be better though

I like the whole Circles idea, have got people categorized into Work, Uni, High-School, OcUK, etc. One thing that someone told me yesterday is that other people (your friends etc) cannot see the names of your circles or what circle they are in... thus there's no need to be polite and I can dump certain people into a ****ing ****wit arses circle :D.

i like that aspect too, people just know they are in your circles not which specifically :)

also no one seems to use g chat, ive been sat on there for around 3 years now on my own waiting for people to use it, now they can and dont!

I really like it and could see myself using it instead of Facebook.

Just I have 3 friends on G+ and 100+ on Faceboook :/

I've had an invite in my inbox for a few weeks now, not got round to trying it yet, however, i can't see it surpassing facebook imo, it does everything i need it to as it is. Obviously, that is only my opinion and i may try it and like it, until then though, i'll stick to the above, i'm in no rush to try it yet.

Very hard to discuss something which is closed beta... is it software or not that's my question?

Will SKYPE now go down the pan?

100% disagree.. I know loads of people who don't know about/use facebook.

I have yet to meet someone who doesn't know about google... it's on google's toolbar which is defacto on google's homepage. I think it will be much larger than facebook...

I agree with the OP that Google+ is a more mature version of Facebook much like Facebook was to Myspace/Bebo. I reckon we can have a good few years of unspoiled social networking before the proles move in en masse and ruin everything as usual.

If you don't know about facebook in today's world then you are unlikely to be the sort of person interested in using G+. The same applies to people who have heard of facebook but don't use it.

I like G+, I think it has potential, but if it ever exceeds facebook in marketshare it will be a LONG time in the future.

I admit that I don't think this will "beat" facebook, and I'm a Google fanboy. However, I think it will be a success, mainly due to that little notification icon that stays with you through all Google sites (very important!). I also think Google have been very clever with the "CAN I HAZ INVITE" way of popularising it - keeps it "exclusive", even though it really isn't, like FB was all those years ago.

If G+ came out before FB and Twitter, then there would be no need for either of the latter I think

The only thing I use Google+ for is it's free video conferencing facility (albeit through an additional plugin :(). I used it to talk with most of my family over the weekend and it was pretty smooth and easy to use. Certainly better to use that than pay money to Skype for the same privilege. :)

I've hardly had chance to use it, I've invited a few friends on there and only a couple have joined mainly because they either don't want to (they are happy with facebook, everyone else is on there) or want an app (iOS app hasn't launched yet).

Once it gets a bit of momentum, I think it has potential. Although I think I would have preferred Google to augment existing social spaces like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn et al and provide me with a decent one stop shop for Contacts, messaging and keeping in the loop with things.

Like I say there are plenty of people who will look into it because google is their start page. You have to already know about facebook to have it as your startpage.
