Noticeable difference between SSD speeds...

There's quite a difference between the write speeds of an OCZ Vertex 3 (Read 550MB/s, Write 500MB/s) and an Intel ElmCrest (Read 500MB/s, Write 315MB/s).

Does anyone have any experience of using both? Is this difference actually noticeable?

I didn't notice any difference between my Vertex 2 and Agility 3. Had firmware problems with the agility so sent it back and got a X-25m..

Biggest thing with going to ssd is seek speed.

I've went from 100MB/s mechanical to 80MB/s SSD and on to 400MB/s SSD and the big difference was going from the mechanical drive to the slower SSD. Transfer speeds might have been slightly less, but the seek speed was of the order of a 100 times faster.

yep, IOPs are very important, or so i've been told and passing on the knowledge. Dont buy agility and get corsair s3, iops is 80K read write 550/490, another option is corsair gt, 85k iops and 555/495 cost a bit more

500MB/s second is only on perfectly compressible data. In the real world large files already have compression applied and write speeds will be similar between Elmcrest and Sandforce2 - they are both eight channel devices and use similar speed Nand.

I've got an Intel ElmCrest coming next week so I'll be able to see how that compares to the OCZ Vertex 3. :)
250GB Intel 510 "ElmCrest" now fitted. :)

Offical figures:
Read 500 MB/s, write 315 MB/s.

Benchmarks are just that, real world usage you'll hardly notice the difference. I certainly could not tell you if someone took out my Vertex 2E and replaced it with an Agility 3 for instance, have had most ssds here for builds and aside from pretty numbers when benching, no visible difference really. I would however know right away if someone put a mechanical disk, the difference is that great.

I know but it's reassuring to know that both this and the OCZ are making the claimed figures. :)

I'm still running my RAID0 Velociraptors in this system and they now seem sluggish and noisy compared to the silent awesomeness of the SSDs. :D
