****The Official Samsung Galaxy S II Thread***

What does rooting actually mean - Putting a custom firmware on?

Not really.

It basically means you have SuperUser access to the phone, which means you can do all sorts of fancy things (like putting custom ROMs on in some cases), and installing root-specific apps, such as Titanium Backup, Chainfire 3D, etc.

Understood, thanks.

Just installed the stock Kernel using Odin now I'm just trying to figure out how to install the stock ROM.

I extracted the contents of the stock ROM file at first but their aren't any of the PDA/Modem/Phone files so I thought I might have needed to do it in Clockwork, booted down into clockwork but realised it had changed since putting the stock Kernel on. It now appears to be a blue color with not as many settings.

I tried to install it with Clockwork but when I browse to the directory of the folder I saved the ROM to, no files appear.

No doubt I'm doing something stupid again, but I can't figure it out.

Cheers

The blue screen is the default Samsung one, you need to put Clockwork on again the same way you did originally.

After that, just follow the instructions for your chosen ROM, you'll probably be told to put the ROM file on the phone and flash it via Clockwork.

Make sure you put the whole ROM file on too, just as you downloaded it.

Thanks, clockwork is up and running again as normal. For installing the stock ROM their was no guide with it, clockwork still isn't showing the ROM file up for some reason. I am copying it exactly as I downloaded it.

I just used Odin & Flash Stock kernel, then flash firmware with PDA.

Christ sake, I know what I've done wrong now. After installing clockwork again and rebooting my phone is just stuck on the Galaxy s II splash screen, tried going back into clockwork to clear data/cache and it's not solving it.

Phone is now bricked? :o

Finally got the stock rom installing. Phew. Why do I even bother with technology! Hopefully I've got it this time.

Take your time with it read through the posts more ;) You don't want to brick that lovely piece of tech. I would buy a USB Jig if you plan to mess around with it more in future just incase :)

I installed the stock ROM using Odin but the phone is still getting stuck on the Samsung splash screen and just keeps looping. Christ sake

Had to boot back into recovery (clockwork seems to have dissapeared again...) wiped data/cache in their and now everything appears to be working again.

Now I just need to root it....:p

This seems like the easiest way to root it following this guide:
http://samsunggalaxysforums.com/showthread.php/4563-root-the-Galaxy-S-II-via-SuperOneClick

But I'm wondering will the XWKDD kernel used in that guide work for my phone even though my Kernel version is BOKF3? I think this is the issue I had yesterday, couldn't root it because their didn't seem to be a BOKF3 kernel.

Cheers
