The Thing - prequel to John Carpenter’s 1982 movie

Saw the 1982 film at launch, my fave horror film of all time (even though it was a remake of a 50's b movie), this is gonna have to be amazing to do it justice.

I was fortunate enough to see The Thing at the cinema a few months ago, it was only on for 1 day and it was the remastered version. I think it was to celebrate the release of the Blu Ray. I had seen it before, and I do own it on DVD. I also recently bought it on Blu Ray and the picture quality is fantastic, I highly recommend it.

If you look at the IMDB page in the triva section beneath the spoiler tag there's an interesting rumor, I won't post it for obvious reasons.

This is a prequel, not a remake. I think some people seem to believe it's the latter.

Interesting rumour indeed! If it were to be the case, while it would be a prequel, a sequel (presuming it's successful) would technically be a true third film to both.

No John Carpenter
No Kurt Russell
No Sombrero

:(

The idea of a prequel, for any film is just plain daft as we already know how it will (or should) end. It's also a fair bet that the rather gruesome sfx of the original will be replaced with OTT CGI and it will lack Carpenter's deft touch.

Maybe I'm just touchy. I watched the original on VHS back in the 80's when I way too young for that sort of freaky stuff and it sort of traumatised me. :D

Depends if there's a back-story to be told. With the Alien prequel we'll get to find out where the space jockey and the Alien came from. Doesn't mean the prequels won't suck of course :)

Here's an old interview and a few snippets for those that don't want to read it all.

The Thing Prequel: Interview With Cast & Crew!

They talk about using cgi and stuff that will be completely animatronic (it sounds like the transformation will be cgi then switched to animatronics). They've recorded parts in both english and Norwegia so its possible it will be subtitled a fair bit. They are using some of the original soundtrack and they have used the original film throughout to replicate the sets etc.

:D

They mention the "They Live" Remake which has now become a total re-imagining.

The original was an awesome film, without the sunglasses... its gonna be rubbish :)

Here's a gif of the split face animation from the trailer....

Here's a slightly different trailer, the bloods not so much brown, its all red and the darker scenes are lighter so you can see more of the transformation with the bloke on the floor and a few more flashes of scence at the end...

There's some pictures of maquettes that were done as concept art, supposedly for this film. I'm quite sure they're real now as you see 'the hand' one one in the trailer, like a nightmare version of the Adams Family lol.

It's a prequel. Norweigan camp. Split face in that trailer ends up being the corpse they bring back to base in the Carpenter film. You find out why there's an axe in the door, why that dude in the chair slit his throat, things like that. One of the characters in the trailer is wearing 'Norweigan sniper's' clothes.

You can even read a leaked version of an earlier script (which I hope has been revised slightly because it's rather Hollywood in places and part of the ending sucks). The story is truly a prequel, however the execution is very similar to the 82 film; paranoia, grotesque creature effects, whodunit, etc. In that way it's something of a remake. I would wager if this is successful they will make a sequel, but as the director has stated The Thing is perfect as is, it would be a chronological sequel to Carpenter's film, featuring... well.

Anyway, it's sort of ironic because this is a film imitating a film about a thing that imitates other things.

Hm, like others my only real concern is that it simply doesn't offer anything worthwhile. It could sitll be a good movie in it's own right but what can they do to appeal to fans of the previous version?
I could understand if the 82 version was no longer watcheable. But due to the excellent SFX, directing and production of that film then it still stands up so well even today and so what can a new version offer?

On the other hand, it is something that is of interest to me and I will see how it turns out. I'll go to see it unless it gets universal horrid reviews.

I own the 82 version on bluray and only seen it for the 1st time about 2 years ago!! I just never bothered because I seen Alien and Aliens as a child and never liked them, still don't.
but for some reason The Thing is one of my favorite films and infact i'm due a watch of it for only the 2nd time.

Some say we all know what will happen, but even in the previous one it was mostly obvious. Didn't bother me, it was just so well done that being predictable wasn't an issue. all horror movies are predictable and i usually hate them for it, but The Thing had so much more to offer that I loved it.

I'm not getting my hopes up, but am quietly hoping it delivers.

Its for a new generation and a few older people like us that will remember and original classic.

It doesn't look terrible from a standalone point, in fact it is the perfect recipe for horror imo, take any 20 something to watch this and i bet they will be jumping in their seat. Then rent the original to compare and laugh,

The original is one of the earliest horror films i can remember watching on VHS as a kid :)
