Fringe is utter carp?

Well I really wanted to like it. I honestly did. After many internet & friend recommendations. But I just hate it.

Reasons:

- Cheesefest.
- All mysteries solved by ridiculous BS "science".
- Pacey. :/
- OMG it's traced back to Massive Dynamics! Didn't see that one coming. *yawn*
- Crap acting.
- Crap special effects.
- The crazy old man isn't funny or endearing. He's just tedious.
- Lack of hot chicks. The main char is too manly.
- It's basically a re-hash of X-files.

etc etc.

Just me, or anyone feel the same?

Great show, first season is a bit "monster of the week" but second season on it becomes brilliant when the plot arcs take main stage.

But I guess if "lack of hot chicks" puts you off you should just go watch CSI or some other crap.

Not on it's own it doesn't, no. But it's certainly a contributing factor when a series has nothing else to offer.

I think your taking it a bit too seriously.

EDIT: Got to admit I did find the show started to get a bit tedious after awhile and haven't even bothered watching the last half of season 3.

I'm already well aware of the concept of fringe science, yet I still consider the rubbish they come up with in "Fringe" nothing more than (ridiculous) fantasy.

Season 1 is a bit marmite, try season 2 onwards, it's one of the best shows on tv.

A sci-fi where the 'sci-fi' aspect is vaguely believable isn't too much to expect.

Fringe is little more than a live-action kids cartoon.

What did you expect? It's a program called 'Fringe' that focuses on 'Fringe Science'. Of course it will be a bit 'out there'.

Which is a good thing imo, as it links everything together. But again why expect anything different Massive Dynamics and the experiments Walter/William Bishop did years ago is part of the backbone for the series.

You must be watching a different show. Most of the cast are great to watch, and the quality beats most of the other rubbish on tv. John Noble and Leonard Nimoy are top notch.

The madness is great to watch, and a superb example of some great acting ability.

- Lack of hot chicks. The main char is too manly.

She looks quite feminine to me. I'm glad the show doesn't rely on neadless sex appeal, it would be crude.

- It's basically a re-hash of X-files.

Can't really argue with this, but the mystery/investigation/monster of the week format is pretty common in sci fi (because it works for ratings).

On a seperate note, it seems sci fi shows won't ever win completely with viewers.

Some people absolutelty despise everything being wrapped up in a neat little package, with long, drawn out scientific explanations, full of technobabble that explain it. others enjoy that.

Others like a bit of mystery, where there are still questions to be asked, others absolutely hate it because they feel they have been robbed of their divine right for answers.

I prefer it somewhere in the middle tbh, some good answers but with a bit of mystery is still the way to go. it's what keeps people interested in a fictional Universe.

*Disclaimer, I realise that the above shows do not in fact have proper science, that has been proven. However i realise they can be enjoyed for what they are without being overly analytical.

Edit: I don't watch romantic teen dramas, so i wouldn't have heard of 'Pacey'.

Hated it. Hence hating JJ appearing in anything other than a live broadcasted execution.

And anyone of my generation will be familiar with the names of the main chars of Dawsons Creek wether they liked it or not.

Through girlfriends etc mostly.

I'm happy to say I knew no-one, male or female who watched (or admitted to watching) that. I'd only recognise Dawson because of his Scary Movie appearance!

Hmmm. We also just couldn't get into this after trying the first 2 eps for exactly the reasons the OP listed. But I'm the first to admit that when both my wife and myself don't take to something together we can be a bit quick to dismiss it.

So... do the defenders in this thread think it gets better? And if so, when? And is it worth just skipping a series? Or do most here just disagree with Van Hellseek's estimation of the first few episodes ('cause I have to say, I agree with him with respect to the admittedly small amount I've seen).

Still have the DVDs knocking around. They're in the 'to put on auction site' pile, but that pile can take months to turn around...

I gave up on this after the first 7/8 episodes, then after S2 started a friend really hassled me to start watching again, so I did from the beginning and now it's in my top 10 shows ever.

If anyone cares, X-Files, Babylon 5 and Battlestar Galactica are also in my top 10.
