sata 3 Vs 6 Gb/s

It goes in order of speed 1 being slowest/oldest:

1: SATA I = 1.5gbps
2: SATA II = 3gbps
3: SATA III = 6gbps

gbps = gigabits per second (bandwidth)

If so, then for a mechanical HDD, it makes no difference whatsoever. For an SSD on the other hand, you are opened up to much higher read and write speeds. SATAII or SATA 3Gbps is limited to speeds of 300Mbps.

In practice it's around 300MB(ytes)ps for SATA 2 and 600MB(ytes)ps for SATA 3.
 
So when i'm looking to replace my 500GB HDD for one with a larger volume, are you saying there isn't much point in buying a SATA III one over a SATA II one??

My Mobo supports SATA III, and i'm using an SSD (60GB vertex 2) as my boot drive but I need more storage space. I was looking at the WD 2TB drive, the SATA III is another £5 over the SATA II.

With mechanical hard drives, they have updated them to sata 3 so they can charge more, not because they are any better/faster

With ssd's you should check the speeds it is rated at, if it is higher than sata 2 can handle (~300mbps) you need to put it in a sata 3 port for optimum performance
 
Uhm, is this still the case? Seems spurious to advertise a HDD as "6Gbps" if mechanical HDDs cannot achieve that. I can't believe they would charge you extra for something for which you receive no benefit.

Anyway, I have bought a SATA III drive (WD Caviar Black 1TB) and then just realised that I have got a SATA II motherboard. I was gonna ask what noticeable performance difference I will notice, e.g. will every file transfer be half as fast? But this thread suggests that I wouldn't have got a difference from SATA III even if I did have a SATA III capable motherboard.

Glad I didn't get an SSD though! Think I will wait until I upgrade my mobo for that, which sadly could be some time.
