Is a lack of flash at stock even that big of a deal? Iirc there's been a fair few phones modified (read: hacked) to run flash on worse hardware than this.

as long as the phone isnt as slow as the demo videos have shown then it will be a hit.
if it is as slow as the demo videos with very laggy interface it could be a huge problem trying to sell it over the SF given the SF from what i have seen isnt as laggy when trying to move through the phones features.
either way both phones need to be removed of all Orange rubbish though not sure how easy it is going to be to unlock the MC, hopefully easy like SF

Again the mobile will be slow and as laggy (maybe not as bad as shown in the videos so far) as the SF and other mobiles.
However this will all be fixed by simply flashing a custom ROM, using launcher pro, go launcher ex etc.
EDIT:
The SF was terrible as well on stock, not as bad as the skate from what has been shown so far, you probably seen SF with custom ROMs etc. on it, as once a custom ROM is on the SF it is much smoother and quicker.

noob question but all this custom ROM means what? overlocking phone like you do with pc? and if so arent their pretty big risks security wise and hardware wise?

Zte dont, they give orange the phones who then install all there rubbish, the Zte branded Skate will be running stock android 2.3
It has average battery life, you won't get this long out of it. It's got about the same as the desire (original) - a decent days worth - possibly less if you don't play much on it.
