16:10 - RIP

Some games can be hacked yes. But it doesnt change the fact that the 16:9 FOV is bigger by default.

Depends on the scaling method that the game uses, which is nothing to do with the aspect ratio itself. So you can't say 16:10 is inherently inferior because of a choice of some game developers. Optically field of view can be independently adjusted.

Is it? Forgive me for joining the others in being fools, but I have no issues with using 90° or 100° FOVs in games with my 16:10. I've also never seen black bars in any PC game where FOV matters (racing, shooting, action, RPG), and even the majority of Indie games get it right too. I've also never had to do any hacks to get it working.

Hack, edit or whatever you call it.

Starcraft 2 is a good example. Not possible to edit Fov in that game so you get smaller Fov 16:10.

There are plenty of games from 2011 that doesnt support 16:10. Assassins creed brotherhood is just one example. Whitcher 2 too.

The developers use hor+ which means that 16:9 get bigger FOV by definition.

i must be the only person who prefers 16:9 :p

for instance, im watching the F1 in HD and i can make it full screen - my monitor becomes a TV :D :D :D
No.....You must be about the only person who doesn't have a proper large screen HD TV to watch F1 in HD ;) :p

Everyone already has a 50" plasma, we don't want to watch TV on a 22" monitor.
+1: :) :) :)

Maybe in width, but presumably it's taller? You cannot take away width without adding height to compensate.

No, you get no extra FOV heigt using 16:10. This is how the developers program their games. They make them primarly for 16:9 and when they add 4:3 and 16:10 support they simply crop the 16:9 FOV (Leaving out the left and right part of the 16:9 FOV).

Crappy support yes, but thats how they do it.

hmmm
1920 x 1200 = 16:10

1920 x x1080 = 16:9
So they have the same horizontal resolution

So which pixels are being cropped by game developers ?

Horizontal fov should be the same on both monitors given that the horizontal resolution on both is identical. If it isn't, then the game isn't coded properly. Anybody who says otherwise is simply incorrect.

Trana, you have consistantly said 16:10 gains you no extra vertical fov. Mass effect says you are wrong http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=18039606&postcount=40. Stalker would also like to confirm this ( youll have to google it)

Its about 50/50 with games - i.e. most source games 16:9 and 16:10 have the same vertical angle - 16:9 just gets less pixel resolution of the same view but 16:10 has less horizontal angle. Whereas quite a few games based on Unreal Engine both have the same horizontal angle but 16:9 has less vertical angle - with the same pixel resolution.

Personally I don't see what the issue is 16:9 works fine with most games aslong as you have atleast 1000+ vertical pixels and a ~22+ display, its only feels "letterboxy" if your playing at 720p type resolutions on a small display or with black bars.

I have to agree here. I don't know where this loss of FOV is coming from with 16:10 monitors. I've never seen nor experienced it.

Hell I have both16:10 and 16:9 monitors and I've run the same game on them both. Witcher 2, which as of patch 1.3 supports 16:10.

I've run the game on both resolutions and there's no loss in FOV at 16:10.

Also since moving to a 27" 16:9 monitor, I don't mind 16:9 as much anymore as I did on old 22-22$ mointors.

I prefer a higher vertical viewing field in 16:10 than a narrower 16:9 when I play games.

Screw what the games does with fov etc, it's all about what suits your eye best !

Just to make some things clear here.

1) Aspect ratio has nothing to do with high resolution. You dont get higher resolution just because your monitor is 16:10 instead of 16:9.

2) 16:9 isnt the same thing as 1920x1080 and 16:10 isnt the same thing as 1920x1200. It is completely different things. 16:9 and 16:10 are aspect ratios. 1920x1080 and 1920x1200 are resolutions.

3) The way the field of view change with different aspect ratio is dependent on the scaling method used by the gamedeveloper. In recent years around 90 percent (if not more) use HOR+ which means that you get bigger field of view in 16:9.

4) It is physical impossible for a game to have the same FOV in 16:10 and 16:9 with correct scales. If you dont see the change in FOV switching between different aspect ratios you either dont notice the difference that actually is there or you dont notice the letterbox or stretch.

5) The FOV usually has nothing to do with resolution. The FOV is the same for 1920x1080 and 1366x768. The game will just be more detailed in 1920x1080.

Your totally right at default. Then you go into the config files and change the field of view to whatever you fancy.

But don't some multiplayer games disallow such config. tweaks? Personally I leave things as they are so I haven't had experience with this.
