Biohazard loves playing devil's advocate, I don't think there is anything behind his point other than the urge to cause debate.

And who are you exactly? Fancy that, debate on an internet forum.

You know nothing of me, and yes I find the police highly hypocritical at times for small and big things.

I hope they do some awesome stuff like charging horses and then loads of beating people with sticks, it just makes watching the news so much more enjoyable! They'd better have some good aerial footage of it if they do this though - a police riot horse charge without aerial footage is like a supercar without an engine.

It doesn't matter who I am, I've read your posts for a while and it's a recurring theme.

I knew you'd like my post though, gives more reason to argue. ;)

Incidentally, riot officers were authorised to use "necessary force" during the last student riots. It is then up to local commanders to use their discretion. First time in a LONG time officers have not been given very specific instructions for these incidents.

I have not heard the term "necessary force" before? What legislation does that come under?

Are you getting confused with "reasonable force" ?

No, I mean how can you be so sure of yourself and something so subjective?

I must have missed the moment you hacked into my head and downloaded my beliefs and thoughts.

Why should the gangs be given a chance for revenge?

I would authorise police to use full force if it came to a full shoot out. Basically police should just round up all the gangs with heavy force and give them harsh justice.
The last thing we want is a massive shoot up on our streets. The very last thing. It's all well and good to sit behind a computer screen going "I'd authorise full force", but you're commanding people to kill people. It's the worst case scenario imaginable and should be the absolute last resort, used only when it's likely that not using immediate lethal force is the more dangerous option.

The best outcome possible is a neutering of the riots with as little force as possible. The best way to stop all-out warfare against the police is for the police not to be reactionary, and instead act as an almost non-violet blocking force. If the police use violence it just fuels the rioters and gives them reason and drive to do even worse in revenge.

What planet are you living on?

What I meant was that if arrests could be made without any violence, then fair enough.

However if gangs start opening fire, then police shouldn't be restrained either.
