Do they? I thought they typically excluded riots / civil unrest.

Turned on the news this morning to hear Theresa May saying we need "consensual policing" to solve the current riots.

Does Theresa May live in the same country/planet as the rest of us who are looking at London?

She seems to be of the opinion that a stern talking to will send these rioters back home to bed and a horlicks.

Perhaps she needs to spend an hour or 2 in riot gear, so she understands a little better? :p

One problem with the police going in hard, I can guarantee you that there will be a lot of 'civilian' casualties. Unfortunately as these things break out 'innocent' people are coming out to spectate or to purely get out of the area. Furthermore, there are scenes where yobs have very young children amongst them. Any death/injury of a young child will evoke a far greater 'community' response.

It's v easy for all of us to be perched on our nests looking down & give instructions such as army/water canons, tear gas etc. In all honest I think this too but at the 'ground' level this isn't going to work. The only 'safe' solution is a curfew but as we saw yesterday, trouble started at 4pm so brining in a curfew at 9pm may already be too late.

Im sorry but letting soldiers loose on the streets is complete and utter rubbish.
What we do need is for the Police and their leaders to get a clue in the next 48h and go on the "moderated" offensive.

They are treating this as a protest, with the kettling and policelines.

An ex copper om LBC was just saying that the Met police have terrible leadership with no spine anymore, they have access to baton round guns that fire a nearly (as he described it) harmless projectile thats liek getting hit by the force of a cricketball.

He also said as soon as you start throwing stuff back at least half the crown gives up cos no one wants to get hurt.. I completely agree now.

If there is any unrest tonight they need to stamp on it and give it a beating and arrest them.

Just let the police do their job, dont need the bloody army on the strrets...this is Britain not some 3rd world country.

Are there enough police to overwhelm the rioters or do we need soldiers to make up numbers if nothing else?

At this point it will take too long. There would have to be legal changes and time to bring in the equipment. Plus, they are afraid of getting prosecuted if they injure any of these yobs.

The legal changes can be done right now, the PM can declare a state of emergency and suspend whatever regulations need suspending. This should be followed by recalling parliament.

Look out boys, here come the Specials

I can't work out if that is a mocking comment - but if it is i'd suggest you wind your neck in. They will be going out there FOR FREE and getting beaten, having bricks and petrol bombs thrown at them and putting themselves in mortal danger.

And the tories inability to do anything about it? Great.

The problem is the government know that they will be hung out to dry by many of the people in this country if they come down hard. It is all Thatcher's fault after all.

Hear hear. I have every respect for them and I wish them well in dealing with this.
