Time to create a public policing arm of the UK military, like the Italian Carabinieri.

These people are all taking advantage of the weak and under-resourced nature of our police force.

We don't have the equipment to protect the innocent when tear gas is being used. We haven't got the masks for the police, the fire brigade, ambulance staff etc etc. Tear gas is for clearing out an area such as a square or a building. It won't stop people running amok.
The use of any of these things is incredibly high risk and low reward, as you put it. It may prevent a bit of rioting but it is highly likely to increase the ill feeling within the rioters mind. That'll make them more resolved and allow them to believe what they doing is right in "fighting the man".

They feel that way already. They couldn't have any more contempt for the police and the law than they already do.

I do actually agree with this, however for one reason or another over the past 15-20 years, communities have broken down to the point where they are completely innefectual for this - Gone are the days of being taken home by someone locally and being properly dealt with by parents for misbehaving

One thing to note is that all this loot is going somewhere and most likely to these scums homes. When your 16yr old son comes home with a bag of basmati rice and a 43" plasma, i should think alarm bells should start ringing. Those parents who do not report there children should also be held liable for the exact charges as thier children or if not that at least of handling stolen goods.

30 years ago there would have been a line of police with riot shields and batons battering heads and moving forward while the police behind them dragged the prone injured rioters to vans for carting to prison not hospital.

Parents these days have more chance of being along the lines of:

"Go out and nick us a nice 50" plasma telly or you're not getting any more tabs for a week!"
