Riots in Tottenham, London! (NO RACIST COMMENTS)

Indeed, it comes from the previous administration repeatedly hanging the police out to dry when it was politically expedient to do so, while criminalising more and more behaviour. They have now been conditioned that the government won't support them.

I'd agree with this. It's also a very good (albetit) cheap way for anti government folk to score points suggesting that DC didn't do enough or quickly.

left-authoritarian so labour?

NuLabour were right-wing, semi-liberal - they did some good authoritarian stuff like introducing CCTV cameras (again, I note with irony that the people who were all 'omg it's 1984 all over again' while Labour were in power are now happily using footage from those CCTV cameras to identify the looters) but they used them as a replacement for real policing rather than as a complement to.

Also as I said last night, coverage on the news and Internet shows how many of the rioters faces are identifiable. So some of them, and their parents may have finally realised they are in trouble. They will be quick to arrest and hand down example sentences to those on the Met's current most wanted rioters pictures list.

Water Cannon is totally pointless in the vast amount of cases we've seen on the TV anyway.

I dislike the notion that DC 'authorised' the police to use plastic bullets as well. The police always had that authorisation.

They are legally allowed to use them, that doesn't mean they walk the streets and shoot every criminal with them, they'll still have rules within the police that plastic bullet use requires their superiors approval, and thats what we're talking about here.

Frankly the police were unwilling to make any of the big calls, marginally understandable in that we only have an acting chief, but more understandable in that Labour turned us into a blame society, everyone passes the buck up the chain now. DC could have said, that decision is up to Theresa May, he didn't, if they do use them and someone unfortunately gets died, the media will blame DC. The police themselves are afraid to do anything, what we need is, rather than the public and media managing to crucify cops all on their own, we need a strong government that tells the public and media to **** off. WHen a cop does something wrong, its dealt with internally, without the media circus. The police need to be able to do their jobs, with force when required, without fear.

Apparently they can add a special dye to the water used in the water cannons that when it comes into contact with skin, will stain the skin for sometime and show up under ultraviolet light!

A good way of linking to people involved. But apparently the dye is expensive so won't be used.:o

Anyone see Gove vs. Harman on Newsnight?

Harman is a disgusting woman with an awful agenda and I sincerely hope all of you Labour fanboys can see her for what she is. She is a complete disgrace, trying to pin this all on the reform of the EMA, spending cuts and other tax related issues.

We are STILL spending far more money than we earn every year, there is still a massive deficit. The Labour loaded agenda moaning about Tory cuts is frankly ridiculous. They've barely cut enough to get the IMF off our backs, the country is still on the path to bankruptcy, courtesy of Labour.

She acts like these children were perfect under the old regime, but the second the Tories got into power and cut their free £30/week just to go to school (ridiculous in itself) that they rose up and decided to 'protest' (not riot). These kids are very much the children of a Labour government who mismanaged this country for thirteen years. These are Labour children, acting in the Labour way.

They feel deeply entitled to their freebies such as being paid to attend free education and plentiful benefits. Now they may lose some of these (as they rightly should), they feel as though they are entitled to rob and loot from other members of society. Labour created this entitlement culture and it really makes me sick that Harman can sit there and try to twist it to be the Tories fault.

I sincerely hope people can see through her bare faced lies and the lies of Ken Livingstone.

Harriet Harman went out of her way to praise ethnic minorities for cleaning the streets but conveniently would not mention race or skin colour when it came to those committing the violence.

What is all this crap about moaning they have nothing to do, when I was a kid I had a park and played football and one youth club, where I live now the kids have nothing to do, they are not out stealing things.

...live from a court in London ... a black man up for looting. He was a primary school teacher called Anthony Lexus Bailey . Unbelievable.

Can't wait to see the 'sentences' that will be handed to the children that are involved in this mass looting.

They wont be punished anywhere near as severely as they need to be, considering what they've done.

Not punishing them enough will breed yet more lack of respect for authority and the state amongst these children. They'll know the discipline is a joke when even after they've smashed the country to pieces and stolen millions of pounds worth of things they get a slap on the wrist and nothing more.

Their parents should all be punished severely too.

Any parent that let their child remain out night after night, knowing what was going on should be ashamed of themselves and frankly doesn't really deserve to be a parent.

They deserve their benefits cut completely, but of course, if that's done it will be more fuel to the Labour bs fire and more of an 'excuse' for them to loot some more.

Yeah this was mentioned on Sky News this morning.

I think it would be a good idea, however what you have to remember though is there are a lot of spectators, so the water cannon would have to be quite accurate in hitting those that are truly rioting and looting/causing damage and not those who just want a snap on the camera.

They are legally allowed to use them, that doesn't mean they walk the streets and shoot every criminal with them, they'll still have rules within the police that plastic bullet use requires their superiors approval, and thats what we're talking about here.

I respect the escalation, and remember I've probably been one of the most vocal people in this thread saying we SHOULDN'T be using plastic bullet/water cannon/et al. However, the deployment of plastic bullets is a decision that is made by the police; not the government. We shouldn't be muddying the water and suggesting that it was inaction by the government that prevented the deployment of plastic bullet guns. It was the police accepting that it wouldn't be a wise idea that rightly prevented the deployment.

Considering theres better/more/clearer footage from peoples phone camera's than there is from CCTV, that rather makes CCTV pointless. We don't want to be watched ALL the time, when rioting is going on, get camera's out there, thats not a new thing, that happened in previous riots without CCTV.

Maybe one of the reasons we have less cops on the street is Labour decided to police through the absolute and scary presence of, CCTV. If there were less camera's, which people forget are there, and more cops on the streets, would this have happened, would there have been a more visible police force in the street, with more people knowing who they are and police having more information?

CCTV's aren't good and despite all the CCTV footage, the MET seemed to not notice how badly it was getting out of control very quickly, nor where the trouble was.
