I respect the escalation, and remember I've probably been one of the most vocal people in this thread saying we SHOULDN'T be using plastic bullet/water cannon/et al. However, the deployment of plastic bullets is a decision that is made by the police; not the government. We shouldn't be muddying the water and suggesting that it was inaction by the government that prevented the deployment of plastic bullet guns. It was the police accepting that it wouldn't be a wise idea that rightly prevented the deployment.
No, it was a police chief who didn't want to upset the public and appear heavy handed and call everyone in from leave straight away, it was a police chief who didn't want to get blamed if someone got seriously injured from a plastic bullet, it was a police chief who was too afraid to do his job.
Sorry but your argument still holds no weight, at all, shoot someone with a bullet, it hurts, it makes carrying out criminal activity much much harder.
But you're right, we shouldn't end up having people blame the government for decisions the police SHOULD be making, but here's the problem, when they are too afraid to do what needs to be done, they want someone in the government to give the go ahead, so if something goes wrong the press crucifys whoever that is, rather than the guy who should have given the go ahead in the police.
Again, its this stupid blame culture, its not just the police, local government don't want to do anything drastic or new for fear of them getting the blame for anything, our public sector workers have become a bunch of scared little girls unwilling to do anything without direct instructions.
