Well David Cameron stated yesterday something of the lines that anyone caught causing damage "will go to prison".

Another Cameron lie then - people pleading guilty in London have already been released without imprisonment (unless you count the night they spent in the cells beforehand) or being fined.

From what I understand, most have been released on bail, pending sentencing.
The magistrate courts don't have enough sentencing power.

Yes to an extent, however think of it like this...

SCHOOL TODAY - Kid Causes trouble, throws abuse at teacher, Kid gets special help, Suspension, kid joins another school and it continues

SCHOOL IN THE PAST - Kid Causes Trouble - Cane across the hand, Kid most of the time thinks twice.

You are 31.

Were you caned at school? I doubt it, given you were at school in the late 80's and early 90's.

What is all this nostalgia based on?

You ever checked when the most violent riots took place in this country?

The problem is not the quality offered by the education system, it is that most of those individuals have had none at all, and their parents haven't filled that void either. They lack knowledge of the most basic of rules to carry on a normal life on a civilised society, labour's attempts to "buy" the attention and assistance to school of these kids have only trivialised the importance of such rules.

Where do we go on for now? That is what all policy makers should be thinking right now.

Luckily we have crap weather and it will stop this but whats to stop it if it doesnt rain?

a little bit of unrest and will it kick off again? People know if they it quick they can get away with it, or was it just mob mentality and people joining in?

I believe something like national service would be a good idea, but it will never happen.

I would love to see National service brought back. Like you said it will never happen :(

National Service won't do anything to solve the problem of social exclusion. These people are deeply suspicious of authority and the idea that you can train and discipline someone who doesn't want to be trained or disciplined is a mere fantasy. You'd effectively be sending them to a prison for a year since that's where they'd end up for not following orders, going AWOL, assaulting officers etc.

The problem of the entrenched 5% is only going to get worse unless we heavily invest in social entrepreneurship within a state controlled framework - the coalition seem intent on doing the opposite.

Wanton violence and thievery is what social exclusion looks like. It's nothing new either, it's just that this time it was co-ordinated so that everyone was doing it at once.
