Bloodline, I think you've forgot that Arsenal are absolutely desperate for a LB. That position isn't a matter of improvement, it's flat out desperation for a player there. Gibbs will last 10 mins, Traore is going on loan and is useless anyway, and Vermaelen not in the centre is ruining the only good thing about the defence.

Oh yeah how depressing. I did actually forget that we don't really have a first LB not a lone a backup.

How much did the Newcastle guy go for again? £5-6m?

That annoyed me more than us letting cesc go. Enrique goes to liverpool for under £10mil and we stick with Gibbs who gets injured less than 90 minutes into the new season! I'm sure that even if we offered the same amount he'd pick us over 'pool.

Brave assumption considering the ambition Wenger's shown so far, selling left right and centre and replacing with no one.

can they not just stick one of the other CB's in LB or even Song at LB? and keep verm as a CB?

Mascherano played amazing as a CB and wingback for barca in some tough games.

surely that would be a better option than sticking your best CB at LB?

I would happily see Utd PAY Rovers £1m (Wes Brown fee, if reports are to believed) so they take Gibson off us :D

Is it just me that finds it very strange that what has to be the lower of the two transfer fees for Brown and OShea is known, but the larger one isnt?

I cant believe for one moment even Rovers will pay the reported figure for Gibson, but absolutely fabulous if so.

Popular opinion seems to be that Rick was £5m.

Gibsons place in the pecking order has been demonstrated this season and pre-season so any decent fee will be grabbed with both hands i think.

He's the only one to have any experience on the left, and tbh.. He's the only one I trust to play out of position, and not make a total balls of it!

Indeed it's what they need! Their wingers are ****.
We don't actually have any wingers really: Malouda is an attacking midfielder; Kalou is a striker; Anelka is a striker; Sturridge is a striker; Lukaku is a striker; Benayoun is a number 10; Kakuta is a number 10. The only time any of them get near the touchline is when they're subbed off!

Also, Mata is probably better described as an attacking midfielder than a pure winger, given that he drifts a lot (Silva is probably the player he is most comparable to). Certainly nothing like Young, Valencia, Nani, Lennon, Bale etc. would have course be over the moon if he signs though, as he's probably the best player in Spain not at the big two (now that Kun is gone) and would certainly add much-needed creativity to our attack. Of those I listed above, only Benayoun and Kakuta would ever think to pass the ball instead of shoot, and neither of them are regular starters.

Torres was admittedly crap himself last season, but a big reason he didn't score was that Malouda, Anelka, Drogba, and even Lampard never played passes to him at the right time. The number of blocked efforts or shots from acute angles we see from our players really does get on my nerves; it's part of the reason that, even when there's less creativity in our team than in a Michael Bay film, we still manage to have more shots on goal than teams like United, Arsenal, City, even Barca. And that's not a good thing - sometimes it's as if they just close their eyes and thump it as soon as they're within range.

Under AVB our passing game has been much improved but the wings are still as lacklustre as ever. Hopefully Mata will have a better understanding with the central striker.
