I'm part of the groundcrew of the Red Arrows, an Aircraft Maintenance Mechanic specialising in Avionics.

I had returned from Newquay airport yesterday after a few days there for airshows in Dawlish (Our display got cancelled due to weather) and Fowey. I found out the news today whilst in the bar on base watching the football. :(

Such a terrible loss, and one that I am sure will be felt for a long time.

My thoughts and sympathies go out to both his family and friends, aswell as his groundcrew who no doubt are going to be having a few stressful weeks establishing what happened, and most of all how it happened, and how not to let it happen again.

So sad, if he was guiding it away from civilisation then he's a hero. Always love watching the Red Arrows and I hope that more unnecessary laws arent introduced as a result of this.

It crashed within 100 yards of someone out walking, lets face it, you can steer it away from crowds but it looked like it had gone off formation and just lost power/control.
 
Terrible news indeed.

As much as it's possible he was moving the aircraft away from crowds, nothing stops you ejecting at the last second where you on the control makes little to no odds. Part of me thinks you can do both. None of us know for sure though, mix of mechanical failure and inability to eject or fell unconscious and was plain luck where it crashed. Nobody knows, yet.

Absolutely amazing job to have though, dying in a plane at 33 doesn't sound so bad to me.

edit: for some context to that, I'd dearly love to be a pilot and never will be.
 
Im no expert, but looking at the video where it shows Red4 gliding off, there doesnt seem to be much of a course correction in the pitch, so probably lost control of his elevators maybe? with the speed and relative height you would have expected to see it glide a little more than it did.

Very sad, I love watching the RAs when they come roaring over my roof during the Farnborough Air Shows; so low I can almost reach out and touch one.
