Surely high detail is also an advantage in some scenarios? Like spotting people at long range? The reason I'm asking is because it seems that it'd be easier to spot someone further away if details and draw distance is max'd.

Most of the time the range player models are drawn at doesn't change, only environmental stuff, so as long as you have draw distance set to max, it normally doesn't put you at a disadvantage.

yea but i think some people use lower settings to remove certain graphical details that would obscure line of sight, such as foliage. Tho I havent tried this in BC2 so cant comment if it makes a difference. Personally I prefer all the eye candy on even if it means lower fps than 60.

BC2 makes a difference. Certain things simply do not render at range on low. One example I can think of is the UAV station on Atacama desert. On low if you look at it from A, the metal plate/wall thing doesn't render. So if someone is on it or hiding there you can see them, on high it renders it at all distances.

^^ See, this what I don't get.

People have been complaining on here for what seems like millenia about the inbuilt 'wallhack' for BC2 yet people turn their graphics down to the lowest setting to gain any advantage they can against other players, and then they bleat on about how good they are and how they pwn everyone else. This is the state of gaming today :(

It's been like that forever.

Mr. X wonders how he can get the upper hand on Mr. Y.

It's the same with peripherals and PC power. All to get an advantage, in competative games at least.

I think some of you are going off on a tangent here.

Example: Sid down the road has a PC that can only play BF3 on minimum settings, fair enough who can complain?

Larry up the road is a showboat and has the best of everything and can run BF3 at max without problems... fair enough.

However if Sid on his low settings dosent see grass, or litter, or any of these little special niceties put in the game by DICE, how is it fair if that means he can see people trying to hide in grass they can see, but he cant?

Thats what im saying. Id love to play the game at max and probably will, but if it comes to situations where I think, cool im in a bush... looking to sneak around or something, and then bang Sid 'No Graphics' headshots me, im not going to be happy and infact thats where real cheating accusations would start as you would be thinking wallhack or something to make me show up on his screen.

I will play for fun and hope that this scenario is not an issue, but if I know its happening and can happen to me, then wheres the fun... as half the things id be seeing on screen would not actually be there for someone else.

And yes I will max the game out, dont worry - little bess needs a proper test anyhow, the lazy cow barely bothers when im playing L4D2 or COH :D

Is all to do with the performance of your PC. Try maxing out BFBC2 on a NV 9series or ati 4 series card at 1080p, the performance spikes you going to get will make you die more. So lowering IQ will make you play better. Its not that difficult to understand.

I wasn't talking about lowering your graphical fidelity to improve performance, but about lowering it to try and give yourself an edge (eg. reducing lighting/foliage density)

Vehicle perks and what they do, swiped from here: http://forums.electronicarts.co.uk/...le-specialisations-your-viewing-pleasure.html (All user based info so may not be exact to how its portrayed ingame)

Active

Zoom optics
Thermal optics - Let’s hope that snow isn’t hot like it is in COD...
IR Smoke – For when your tank thinks it’s a ninja (counters thermal vision, lasers, prying eyes)
IR Flares - For when you’d rather your Jets and choppers don’t take an unnatural shining to the ground
Laser Painter - Designate a target for laser guided missiles, unclear if you can designate targets for your own ordinance...

Passive

Reactive Armour - Under normal circumstances strapping explosives to your tank would be a bad idea... +10 armour (dammit, this isn't WOW)
Maintenance - Increases ‘auto heal’ rate assumedly, at least until it gets removed because of all the feedback...
Extinguisher - This possibly counters the 'bleed' effect your vehicle suffers when it is disabled. Could be active instead: ‘In the event of fire, press X’...
Belt Speed - Faster rate of fire for machine guns presumably (due to a bad translation possibly track speed increase for tanks/speed increase for ground vehicles in general)
Thermal Camo - Most likely a passive feature to counter thermal optics
Proximity Scan - Name might suggest active but if it is like the specialisation in BC2 that I have never once used or seen used... then passive it is
Auto Loader - Hopefully just increases reload times, manual reload for a tank will drive me insane...
Rocket Guidance System
Below Radar - Cheap perk to stealth up your planes and choppers? Or, more likely, provides a ground scanning radar for aircraft to detect tanks, cars, bears, etc (blame the Swedish language again...)
Beam Scanning - Most likely radar to detect nearby objects/vehicles/missiles or to determine the range of a far off object
ECM Jammer - Electronic Countermeasure for jamming radar or guided missiles, possibly active rather than passive
Air Radar - Possibly active and does a sweep at the press of a button, like ‘proximity scan’
CITV Station - Commander’s Independent Thermal Viewer, used in the Abrams in real life. Since ‘thermal optics’ are also listed this is either a passive feature that auto spots vehicles or it could potentially be used by the passenger in the third seat, which would likely put it in the ‘active’ section.

Weapon

Coaxial Machine Gun
Coaxial Heavy Machine Gun
ATGM Launcher - Anti Tank Guided Missile, like the TOW missile on Bradleys for instance. Alternatively: Air to Ground Missile Launcher... bloody military with their contradictory jargon
Guided Rockets - Possibly for the anti air vehicles, or possibly for air vehicles (laser designated?)
Heatseekers - Air vehicles only I suppose (warning: do not use against Godzilla)
TV Missile - Camera guided, specially designed to hunt down and kill television salesmen, the cunning buggers...
Guided Missile - Fly by wire, laser guided or the infamous pigeon controlled concept from WWII, we just don’t know... Possibly the TOW for the IFVs
Canister Shells - Anti infantry round for tank, basically a large shotgun (and you thought the 40mm one was a beast...)
Guided Shells - Laser guided tank shell (requires someone to laser designate target)
APFSDS-T Shells - Armour-Piercing Fin-Stabilised Discarding Sabot Tracer. Made for tanks, by tanks

Tried running bfbc2 on the lowest settings last night, (kept native res of 1920x1200). Didnt do much in the way of improving my skills. Fps were pretty high, but it looked terrible. I like to run it with a bit of eye candy, as this is the first rig ive had thats been able to run games with a bit of detail.

I'd guess people moan about the spotting as it was a gameplay choice by dice.

Settings, they can't really do anything about. You can't force people to use certain settings, and if they only put one set in the game, then they either go high and limit the player base or go low and have people moaning it looks crap.
