****The Official Samsung Galaxy S II Thread***

Those yank versions of the S2 aint as nice.

Whats ridiculous though is that theres THREE versions of the same phone, each with different hardware, looks and names!
This is a bad idea for so many reasons. It hurts branding a lot. With the international S2 everyone can recognise it and they know what they're getting. If you have one phone version of a popular product it will always do better. Samsung could not even properly advertise the S2 in america because they cant use just one phone in a ad, so advertising would be mostly up to the carriers.

I dont like the dedicated search button either, it's really not needed and makes it harder to hit the correct button when you're not looking. The physical button on the international S2 makes sense as you dont have to look at what button to press, i can easily feel it.

And LOL at the "Sprint Samsung Galaxy SII Epic 4G Touch" name. Only in america.

Just spoke to Orange as I can upgrade now currently on a 12 month contract with the Galaxy S, £40 a month few 100 mins, unlimited texts, 500mb net, insurance etc.. Been on pretty much the same plan for years well paying the same each month.

They can offer me the SGS on either a 18 or 24 month contract for less each month but it addes up to around £120 more for the time of the contract which is a bit cack.

I managed to go from a Hero to this SGS on a 12 month so am hoping to do the same, she claims they no longer do 12 month contracts but pretty sure they said that last time as well.

Just found the SGS2 with Talk Mobile for £30 a month, 400 mins, 1000 texts, 1gb net £30 a month and pay £100 for the phone which to me seems a great deal I can sell my SGS for more than £100 and cover the cost of a new handset.

How do I get through to retentions because if they don't want to budge I will jump ship and take that offer up. Contract isn't up to end of November but by time I get some sort of reponse through them and then go ahead cancelling my plan which I have to do in advance anyway its not that far away.

If you go through the official Vodafone Forum you will be able to get a free S2 with the same allowances... and at a slightly lower monthly cost (average £27 over 24 months).

That's the thing with the American phones though, they have network specific units built differently to the rest of the world.

Sprint is the worst offender.

Yes but theres absolutely no reason the change the screen sizes for each network, physical looks, names, and other hardware. It's such a mess.

It makes it seem like "just another android phone". Great way to kill branding for such a great device.

Lol true but then wouldn't it make more sense to keep the large front physical button thats on the international S2...

Spoke to retentions and I can get the phone for a small fee and keep my current contract it appears, I wanted it in white and they have no release date just says "Sept" so need to call again when it is out. Fingers crossed!

I'm with Orange and I did the following:

1) Buy SGS2 offline for £450
2) Dropped Orange plan to £10 a month for 24 months (via retentions). 400mins, unlimited SMS, 500mb per month
3) Get the best offline phone they will give you for that price (I got Wildfire S which is worth £100-£150) if you sell it.

In addition, you can still sell your SGS1 for £100. Total cost of ownership worked out £580 for 2 years for me. There is nothing stopping you selling the SGS2 yourself in 12 months, ad still staying on the £10 a month for the remaining 12 months and getting a new offline phone.

I think you can marginally better deals than this now, but I got this very soon after the phone came out. A lot of people are still getting this phone for free with £30 a month for 24 months, which works out £720.

Got my galaxy S2 today and I'm very chuffed with it. I hope you guys don't mind if I ask some questions relating to it.

- Is there a way to stop facebook integrating with the messaging app? It's quite annoying haven't to sift my way through my facebook friends when I want to send an SMS.

- I don't like the samsung keyboard nor swype. Is there a keyboard which is similar to the iOS keyboard? (ie, when you double tap "space", it adds a full stop)

- I've installed go launcher ex and it's quite nice, does anyone have anything they prefer?

Any other tips or recommendations would be great.

Thanks guys, much appreciated

When you open contacts (and I would recommend Go Contacts too) go to options and something like 'view' you can usually select what contacts are displayed, or just only those with phone numbers.

I thought all keyboards added a . on a double tap of space :) Take a look at Better keyboard or Swiftkey. There are loads of keyboard options and everyone has there favourites. I would suggest watching some videos on Swype though, once you understand how it works and don't try and go too fast, its very good for one handed text entry.

It's not in contacts which is the problem. When you go to add a recipient in the messaging app, it lists all my facebook friends in addition to my phone contacts. The only way to avoid them is by opening the group of phone contacts (if that makes sense).

Thanks man, I'll give those a peak. I don't think the Samsung keyboard does that but maybe I missed something.

question time folks.

ive had my sg2 for a few months now.

i use go contacts, go dialer, go messaging (or whatever its called)

When you choose, make sure you tick the box labelled 'remember' or 'always open with' sorry can't quite remember.

You can also set your default applications through settings - manage application then there should be a 'default' section which you can edit.

Hope this helps.

I just realised I'm missing some calendars. My family share calendars so we can see what's going on when, but I just realised I can only see mine (9 in all) . I tried clearing calendar and calendar storage data and resyncing but no joy. Any ideas?

(Yes I've checked the list to see what calendars are ticked, they aren't there :-/ )

When you say your family shares calendars, how do they do it in the web version of Google Calendar? Can you post a screenshot of your browser version of the Calendar?

Calendar sync posts always crop up every few weeks when a new Android device gets some uptake :p

Okay, fixed. I think I've done it before tbh. In the web calendar if you select to not show a certain calendar,it removes it from your phone totally. Seems an odd way to do it :-/

Before I update my phone for the first time can I just check a couple of things :)

Downloaded KH3 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278 and let it do its self zip. This gives me a single .tar file called:
GT-I9100_XEO_I9100XXKH3_I9100XXKH3_I9100OXAKH3

So next step is put this in the PDA of odin. Put phone in download mode and then connect to computer with kies off. I then use Odin to update.

Have I missed any steps or is that all good? Having had the phone a month I have I hope finally plucked up the courage to update and then root it..
