Hirsch mapped my Saab 9-3 but a slight issue....

Would you like wipers on your wing mirrors too?

Whats the surface area of wing mirrors compared to the rear screen? Which direction do wing mirrors face? Does the rear screen have a wing mirror like 'shroud' around it?

As analogies go, yours isn't a very good one....

To be fair, we are in a thread where you have admitted to driving like a tool, denied that the tyres were the problem, then argued that you need a rear wiper on a saloon?

Did my analogy need to be any good?

I wonder whats more likely.

a) Our cars have magic glass and all the premium manufacturers are engaged in a cost saving conspiracy not to fit a rear wiper to saloons and coupes
b) Saloons and Coupes do not require rear wipers.

ANSWERS ON A POSTCARD.

I'd like rear wipers on sedans, but it's largely unnecessary. When you are moving around a car park looking for a space in heavy rain the window becomes very wet very quickly and can be a pain to see out when reversing. For everyday driving it's fine. The primary need for the rear wash/wipe on a hatchback is to clear through the huge amount of dirt that gets launched on to it, which is a problem sedan vehicles do not suffer from.

It's a stupid analogy. And your interpretation of this thread is as warped as your analogy.

It's very simple.

It would be useful to have a rear wiper on a saloon to clear rain water. Water does not magically fly off the rear screen because not every journey is at 60mph. The aerodynamics do not magically clear the rear screen as per Fox's 'magic glass' car. I drove to the local shops this moring and there were as many beads of rain water on the rear screen as when I left. Neither do people reverse backwards into their driveways or parking spaces at 60mph so that the water magically flies off the rear screen.

As PMKeates has mentioned, the primary purpose of the wiper isnt to clear rain water its to keep the back window clean from the dirt and grime thrown up in foul weather.

This is why even when I did have a rear wiper on my Mondeo I seldom used it - I just didnt have the need.

I guess all the manufacturers are wrong then. I genuinely thought that OcUK had lost the typical MarkDavis pompous replies, but they have returned

If my A6 Avant didn't automatically engage the rear wiper in reverse (if the rain sensor detects rain that is), then I'd never use it.

If it's of any interest, for standing water after a night of rain etc I use the heated screen. Combined with a bit of driving it'll come off reasonably quickly.

I have never used the rear wiper on any of my cars, why on earth would you care about the visibility out of the rear windscreen? You drive forwards and have wingmirrors right? You dont need to see out of the back window, lots of vehicles dont even have rear windscreens.

Will never understand that one, its totally unnecessary.

Your WUM'ing is too obvious my friend. :D

I dont understand your need to see out of a rear window, its not a necessary viewpoint when driving a vehicle. Not once did i ever activate the rear wiper on the Leon hatchback i drove for over 100k miles. Saloons absolutely do not need them.

Ditto. Anything above about 20mph self-cleans the rear screen.

The hatches I've owned really need a rear wiper. The 306 and Fabia in particular can't be driven on a wet motorway without the rear wiper on due to the spray and crud that sticks to the rear screen.

You must have some of Fox's 'magic glass' as well because I've lost count of the times, after a local shower, I've driven to the local shops in various saloons, not exceeded 35mph, and the rear screen is still full of beads of water.

Magic glass - nope. If it was lucky the Bora got a wash every 6 months. Nearest it got to a bottle of Rain-X was driving past the local Halfords. If you looked in the rear view mirror you could see the airflow beading the water off the screen.

I think MarkDavis is being completely accurate in his description of sedan rear screens here; the disconnect is between perceptions of what's 'OK'. If there's a shower and you drive at 35 mph to the shops the rear screen will be covered. However, you can still see through it, and it's not particularly dirty, so it's liveable. MarkDavis obviously prefers a cleaner screen so wants a rear wiper. I don't see the issue.
