I hate torrents... Any programs that can block them?

What is the make and model of the router first of all.

What type of connection is it.

I know he pays for the inet bill guys, maybe the op pays for other bills like, electricity or gas and so on, In that case it would be fair to have a fair usage of internet in place.

I wouldn't jump all over the op without knowing the full situation or how he lives his life.

And the person using torrents will just spend 5 seconds changing the port on the torrent client, or if using uTorrent it may randomize the port each startup.

I doubt he is seeding torrents for fun. He may be a member of private trackers that require him to maintain a certain ratio.

No one else seems to be saying it, but I'll reiterate. Get him a seedbox. He benefits (faster downloads, more upload bandwidth, greater security and no potential problems with his ISP), and you benefit (all he will be using the Internet connection for is downloading files from the seedbox, which is nowhere near as bad as torrenting on the Internet connection itself)

He benefits, you benefit, everyone benefits. At ~£10/month it is presumably less expensive even than paying your fair share for the Internet connection.

a £10 a month my as well get Usenet. No more seeding :D
 
Make him move to BT Broadband. They'll limit the torrent speeds to 0 during peak times :p.

But in all seriousness, since he's paying for it he should be allowed to do what he wants. I would consider you installing a new line and paying for that.

Absolutely, that's another option. If he's just using torrents to download things that are available on usenet, he is an absolute muppet.

$11/month will get him a nice unlimited usenet subscription and will sort Whackeygrunt's problem out nicely (assuming the problem is not so much downstream bandwidth utilisation as death by torrent connections and upstream utilisation) :)

This is the actual solution you are looking for, make him understand the internet doesnt dork if he is using all the upload. Work out your max upload speed, ask him to limit to say 70% of that in his torrent client...
 
If I was the bloke in question, letting you use my internet for free, and then I found out you'd surrepticiously installed a remote desktop application on my laptop so you could manipulate what I was doing (and god knows what else, maybe putting keyloggers on, reading my emails, checking my bank accounts etc) you would at the very least be permanently banned from using anything of mine.

Sounds to me like the best option would be to get another internet connection, you can have more than one phoneline or just look at getting cable.

As a gamer I don't like sharing my connection with anyone, it's bad enough when the wife is surfing never mind people using torrents etc.

Looks like you pay for a subscription to either of these services, I would go down usenet route then you can both use it because you have the same IP.

It also makes it look like your not freeloading and sorts out your lag issues.

+1 For QoS. It will let you play/browse/talk online smoothly without compromising the speed of his torrents heavily. Online gaming doesn't actually require much speed at all.

But if I were you, I'd get that remote client off of his computer.
 
His probably not set it up properly and saturating your upload bandwidth , just correctly configure it for him (ie Cap Upload to a sensible amount) then it should have a far less effect on bandwidth overall !
