Stuff the cheapies gonna get wife a nice Tablet

I agree with the iPad 2 comments.

Why buy a different brand which will be outdated as soon as you get it home?

IMO, iPads just work, plenty of app support, easy to pick up and just use. The downside for me is buying into the whole apple ethos, itunes etc.

Android tablets have more potential to be customised to how you want it to look and function and have on-screen widgets but perhaps are a little more difficult to just pick up and use. The app market at present is growing but no where near as big as the iPad/Apple one - but then, how many fart sound apps do you really need :D

Lets face it, all other current tablets are ipad2 knockoffs. Why not pay the same price and get the real deal rather than an second rate imitator? The ipad2 does everything you need it to do, comes with a mature, whole software ecosystem, I don't see how anyone can take a non-ipad2 tablet seriously.

We have both, the wife has an iPad2 and I have the Asus Transformer. I prefer the Transformer.

I've never understood this. Why do people push products to one-side just because they do not want to be "Apple'd"? Surely products should be purchased on the basis of what each person requires in the first place? Ive personally used an Android tablet, an iPad and the Blackberry Playbook, and the iPad is simiply at the top of the list due to its design and ease of use.

The whole "I hate iTunes" thing also makes my mind boggle. For instance, adding music on iTunes requires you to plug the device in, open up the software and drag and drop the music to the device. Please can someone tell me how this differs from adding music onto memory card?

If you want simple for her its a Ipad 2, it will do everything she wants but its not very customisable.

if you want something that can be modified in a big way and fully supports flash for web pages then Android.

My main gripe with Itunes its not great to transfer things around, I can take a micro sd card out the phone/pad plug it in a friends pc and off you go, no hassle no problems at all, drag off what he wants or add something to it plug it back in the device and its up and running,(unless its as easy on Itunes not used it for a bit).

I've got an iPad1 and a Touchpad & can honestly say that I've not used the iPad for browsing since the Touchpad was charged up.

Being able to view flash sites just makes the whole "tablet experience" so much enjoyable

Ps. The wife doesn't like either of them, she'd rather switch the PC on and use a mouse :)

Whatever you do, give her the money, get her to get it from the states, way cheaper. Missus bought me one on her yank card, £500 iPad cost $850... the WiFi/3G iPad 2 is $630 in the states, which is about £380.

Dropbox anyone?

^^ Which requires a internet connection still not as "easy" as taking a sd card out and sticking in a pc.

What if you had a 1.2gb tv programme that he wanted, would take ages to upload and download via drop box, its easy with a micro sd.

For me it's just personal choice. I don't particluarly like the way apple do business nor do I like iTunes. The fact as a developer you have to pay them a license fee and use an apple product (imac/mac) to develop software for it just doesn't sit right with me, they're forcing you down an expensive route and the fact that they probably release another iteration of the iPhone/iPad within 6 months of you buying the latest and greatest.....

Don't get me wrong, every tablet that comes out is compared with the iPad series because the iPads are very good devices. They do what they say on the tin, I've no problem with that at all, for me however I'd probably never buy apple, I'm sure apple won't go bankrupt just because I won't ever buy one! :P

If it were my brother or parents buying a tablet I would suggest they seriously looked at the iPad as they're not tech savvy and would prefer a device they can get out of the box and start playing with.

Your post is fair enough except for this part. Apple are just about the only company with a fairly reliable release schedule.

If I could have got a Touchpad I would have bought her one as a going away present, but it seems that ship has sailed :( .... which brings me to this thread.

I will be trying to buy it on my card (uk credit card) from say Newegg and having it delivered to her parents house. I don't think it will be a problem. If it is, I'll just try the USA version of Amazon. (I don't want to buy a power adaptor twice... and she's paranoid about unofficial power adaptors after she had a laptop blow up in Russia on her).

I certainly don't hate iTunes/Apple. I'm just not into depending on Apple to keep my music. I/my wife don't have any need for integrated services, and we are not planning no getting iPhones anytime soon. If we were, it would make more sense to get an iphone. Also.. didn't itunes dump a load of users in the cack with their music when they stopped a service a while back? (I.e. Those users lost their tunes and Apple didn't seem to care? Maybe I took the media spin on this one?)

The iPad is what it is. Obviously if you want to transfer TV programmes around on SD cards, you shouldn't buy one. If you visit loads of Flash websites then again, you shouldn't buy one.

It doesn't make an awful lot of sense to make all of these comparisons, especially when it has little relevance to the OP.

What if his wife wants to go and play bingo on a site that requires flash, just because he hasn't said he needs flash doesn't mean its not needed, its something I would imagine most think it would have standard.

There will (most likely) be an iPad app for the bingo site that is a thousand times better than using Flash within the browser.

I think I (well.. my wife) need(s) to go to a store and try out the iPad2 and asus transformer. I'm sure she will like the Apple stuff... I don't dispute it's lovely design and slick interface :-)
