AMD Bulldozer Finally!

Big news, hope they do well and I'm looking forward to the benchmarks! Sadly it seems it's just the server-grade Opteron chips that are shipping atm and the earlier rumours were right: we've still got weeks if not months to wait before the consumer chips hit the shelves! :( Too late for me unfortunately, this machine is falling apart and I have to get a new one now that I have time to build it, once I get busy again it'll be too late.

The interesting part being... "We expect to be launching “Interlagos” in Q4, a little later than we had hoped, ".... Q4 = October onwards. So not even Interlagos in September folks.

Err - I thought John said:

"Interlagos is a server part, there is no desktop variant. The client version of Bulldozer is Zambezi and it will launch in Q4."

I was referring to the fact that Interlagos and Zambezi are all part of the Bulldozer family. With Interlagos being well known to be launching first.

If Interlagos isn't going to be buyable until "Q4", Zambezi is obviously going to be much later.

true

perhaps the Server market is far more important than the consumer market ?

power efficiency vs pure power ?

who knows ?would be nice to have more info though

These delays are driving me up the wall especailly when the thread title keeps getting changed.

Can we do a Dallas season 8 on this thread? Close it and delete it of the server and we all treat Bulldozer as a dream that never happened.

Seeing as people seem to have memory like goldfish on here. One point to remind you all of:

Zambezi shipped for revenue at the end of July. Interlagos shipped for revenue at the end of August.

It looks like Interlagos will reach market first.

Obvious conclusion: AMD are stockpiling the desktop Zambezi to have sufficient supply at launch. If final silicon has been rolling off the production line for roughly a month, it is clearly total ******** that 'performance problems' or 'respins' are the reason for any further 'delays'. As I've stated many times, AMD are severely supply constrained at 32nm until the fab in Malta (New York) comes on line in the middle of next year.

they can stockpile it all they want, i think I might go for an intel rig,
always been an AMD fanboy in the past but im ****ed off with the delay & lack of info.

Interlagos is definitely the server part, the article you linked to earlier spoke of "Opterons" remember?
Zambezi probably coming in October/November.

Indeed!
And the server parts don't have to have as high clock speeds so it was easer to produce them.

Yup, pretty much works like this, if you expect 100k chips a month, and you want 300k for launch with 100k coming every month, you only wait 3 months.

If due to yields you're only getting 50k a month, to hit 300k, you need 6 months, and because you want sustained supply afterwards, you wait an extra couple months so you instead have 400k, 300 for launch, and 50k to supplement the supply over the next couple months and hope that by then yields are improving.

The numbers are off, don't go reading that I'm saying a 6 month delay, its just an example of how less chips than you want extends times a lot.

From Charlie, GF32nm is having issues with yields, which is unsurprising, yields aren't shocking, but they aren't good enough, its still relatively new, and the full capacity of Dresden won't be 32nm yet. That will help, Malta won't necessarily help, its a bit unclear if they are planning any 32nm soi there, they seemingly might have a previously unknown 28nm soi with probably some incorporated tweaks they learnt from 32nm that might not be (completely)fixable without retooling, which 28nm soi would give them the chance to do.

Once Dresden is fully switched over to 32nm, and Llano demand dies down slightly, Bulldozer production will increase a lot. With rumours of a better stepping with some improved performance(its unclear if this is more of a bug fix, or just something they've worked out that will improve performance without really being a redesign), they might be focusing more on Llano output and limiting bulldozer wafers, but then with yields not quite where they expected, getting the supply they need prelaunch has delayed things slightly.
