Deus Ex HR vs deus ex

sr4470, you seem to have great love for Deus Ex, as do i. If this is the case, trust me you will enjoy HR:)

The story element of HR is very similar in its themes and in a way i would call it an expansion of all of the themes bought in Desu Ex(despite it being a prequel*), going in to MUCH more depth and detail, in that respect it is much more focussed and this leads to a more satisfying experience in terms of the story and immersion imo.

Okay, let's talk immersion and story. One example: DE1 had that conversation between a pair of MJ12 soldiers discussing executive orders and how there was already a great deal of potential abuse possible. Detail packed in to point of the EOs being true to real life (I believe Spector hired a lawyer to research them).

Or this completely optional talk with an NSF prisoner at UNATCO HQ:

Oh and you get used to the yellow theme runnign through it (lets not forget that Deus Ex looked pretty average when that came out)

* i hate that word for some reason

It didn't look spectacular, but my PC at the time wasn't that great anyway (I had to make do with a Celeron and a Rage 128 back then). Even Quake 3 would have looked a lot better at 1024x768 v 640x480 (not to mention Voodoo + Glide).

That is always something which has slightly got on my nerves tbh, the philosophical and political conversations that you have with some of the NPC's. Don't get me wrong they are great, but i go up to a bartender in the club in HK and ask for a drink and i get a random lecture about the world economy, or a cleaner seems to have in depth knowledge of a global conspiracy, it seems a bit wierd really, lol.

There are still things like that and random conversations with lots of detail in HR as well, it is actually very faithful to the original

About replaying the original, i really do think it needs a mod to improve the augs such as shifter or biomod and it does look ok with New Vision as well, i wasn't disappointed at all with the graphics whilst replaying it

I was, of course, making a joke about the illuminati plot - I have frequently pondered how, in all of the three games, we have not poked more fun at this central premise when we do so vigorously on these very forums each time certain members (who shall remain nameless) post on it.

The Illuminati doesn't really show up much in the game apart from Everett. It's MJ12 that are the power circle.

The NSF dude presumably had that ideological reason to join up and dislike UNATCO\FEMA to start with. Otherwise why risk his skin?

you post that as though it invalidates my point but in Deus Ex; MJ12 is infiltrated by Illuminati members after Roswell to cover up the Alien crash.

Anyway Illuminati/MJ12/NWO aliens at Roswell and Area 51 these are all baulked at regularly by...well everyone - yet in DX we digest these conspiracy theories, plunge them all into the same plot with little to no sense of irony. In any other media, we'd put the book back on the shelf or switch over.

But don't get me wrong - I love the story as much as anyone I just think it's funny.

My bad, I hadn't investigated that part of the lore.

Well, what else would you want as an alternative plot\story? Standard fantasy villain ala Dragon Age Origins? Random terrorists ala Call of Duty Modern Warfare?

I still prefer the original. I love DXHR, but really dislike certain aspects of it; such as the boss fights - I guess this makes sense when you learn they outsourced them.

I want to go back and play the original again but I'm a little afraid of tainting my memories of it.

There are two defining games of my childhood. Games the genuinely blew my mind. The first was Doom because I had never seen an FPS before. The second was Deus Ex, because it showed me games could be about much more than just shooting. I had never seen anything like it before and had no idea how to play it. When I first started I remember trying to play it like Doom and getting nowhere, just trying to run and gun through the levels just got me dumped on my ass time and time again. Then I tried a stealth run just out of interest and not only completed the level but got a pat on the back for not killing anybody. It totally knocked me sideways. I'm not sure any game has measured up to Deus Ex as far as I'm concerned. Human Revolution is nowhere near it I'm afraid

Wasn't MJ12 created by the Illuminati? I swear I saw books/emails saying something to that effect, and Page basically took over the show and used them as a private army.

As for the story, the reason we all love it even though we look at people who genuinely believe in that sort of stuff as whackjobs is because Deus Ex is a game and we all know the fiction stops and the reality starts when you click 'exit game' ;)

As I understand it, though my knowledge of the politics in Deus Ex is too old to remember clearly:

Everett is the leader of the Illuminati (who gets mentioned as the CEO of Picus in emails), working with Bob Page (he gets mentioned in Zhao's emails, think there might be others too and he obviously features in the end-of-credits scene) and numerous others like Nicolette DuClare (she gets mentioned in some company emails in Picus) and DeBeers (can't remember his role in Deus Ex but he gets mentioned in 1 email on Sarif's secretary's computer). The radio DJ is referring to the introduction of UNATCO which gets headed up by Manderley which is obviously overseen either by the Illuminati or just Bob Page.

By Deus Ex, Page has twisted thingsso his real agenda could be completed by destroying the Illuminati so he could take over using MJ12 and grant himself 'ascension' by merging with Helios. You can kinda argue that with the destruction of the Illuminati by the time of Deus Ex, Picus news collapses too which explains the evidently shocking global news coverage by that time and why MJ12 can seemingly operate in the open in France. Walton Simons is really just a pawn and its as if Page is just manipulating him to get what he needs.

I didn't get that radio DJ - seems early though since UNATCO doesn't get formed until soon before the first game... a terrorist attack on the statue of liberty.

Lucius DeBeers was leader of the Illuminati until he fell deathly ill and asked Everett to put him in cryogenic storage. Though the cure for his disease was discovered, Everett kept him in storage. When you (JC Denton) find him, you have the option to euthanise him so he may not live in the knowledge that his friend and protégé (Everett) betrayed him.

Oh of course I remember that now. DeBeers is obviously heading up something else and trying to get through to Sarif with Everett in charge of Picus and roll on 'deathly illness' and cryo storage and keeping him around as an advisor.

The DJ is basically predicting everything that happens to create Deus Ex but it would obviously be dismissed as the ravings of a conspiracy nut. Which is kinda the point really.

Ok im gonna ply Dues ex 1 again.

Please recommend and tell me how I can play with the latest most useful working gfx enhancments etc...

cheers

There's one called the Deus Ex Ultra high quality mod, but that looks like it is just the HDTP and ENB tweaks changed a bit
