****The Official Samsung Galaxy S II Thread***

Rooting is pretty easy. Guide and files on XDA here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399.

The only thing missing in that guide is that you need to install Samsung Kies (google it, it's Samsungs official backup/restore/update programme) first, as this installs the drivers required for your phone. After installing it make sure that it isn't running in the background and disable it from startup to avoid increased boot time or potential problems in the future when you forget it's running in the background from startup.

To get into download mode on your phone turn it off, then hold down Vol Down+Home(I hold these two down first)+Power, then then text comes up I think you press Volume Up to go to download mode.
 
Waiting for mister package dude to deliver mine today hopefully.

Moving over from a HTC Desire since my network gave me a free galaxy s2 to stop me from cancelling my contract :)

Not bad really they gave me a free 32" HDTV to initially take the contract and now an S2 to keep it going.

Gotta love living in a country with excess mobile phone companies and near total market saturation, they tend to give a lot of stuff away just to entice customers.

Picked mine up form the Voda store yesterday and so far am fairly impressed.

Initial reactions.....

Damn, the back does appear flimsy, but once its on, dont notice that.
Yep, pointless stuff on there from Voda. Will be rooting soon.
Ok, why cant i access the alarm/timer/stop watch from just tapping the clock widget on the home screen?
Not too sure about the 'hubs'.....may stick with vanilla apps and the market for that.
Why have Samsung added their own 'market place' type thingy?
Seem to remember someone saying this will play anything you throw at it. Doesnt seem to want to play my MP4 videos that I shot on my Desire for some reason.
May have to get a new keyboard for it.....would like to try the Swype, but not sure where they have hidden that option...must go dig.

Is still very early days with it yet. Am liking it so far, but having spent the last 18 months with a Desire and Sense, taking a bit of getting used to a new UI.

this or just go into settings and keyboards and its there (you know the obvious place for it too be)

I switched from a desire to this and had no problems....who cares if the back is light when its off the phone? when are you ever going to take it off?

I just installed golauncher and i was good to 'go' , whilst i dont like the samsung ui it is servicable and the apps they installed arent exactly required to be used.

I am very impressed with Vodafone's efficiency.

Talked to them on the phone at 2pm yesterday.

Received confirmation of contract extension within 10 minutes

Received confirmation of shipping at 6:35 pm

Phone arrived by courier at 9am this morning.

The phone itself is very impressive although since I am so used to HTC sense it is going to take me a bit to get used to it.
 
Found and tried Swype......not that hugely impressed. May stick to stabbing the screen with my fat, podgy fingers.

Was also impressed with Voda. Had call from them at 1630 on Wednesday, emails and texts for confirmation in 10 mins, then text at 1710 to say order was out for delivery and it was delivered to my local store at 1008 yesterday morning. Plus it was free too. Now have my rooted and flashed (plus unlocked and with the AMOLED screen) Desire to play around with for a bit and have spare.

Iamtheoneneo - Have you rooted yours yet ?

I take it un-rooting is a very easy process too, in case i need to send it back for anything? Mainly want to get rid of bloatware and also install ad-free. I did like that when it came as part of the LeeDroid ROM i have on my Desire.

i dont like swype either, try this https://market.android.com/details?id=com.moo.android.inputmethod.latin.free&hl=en

and yes, flashing the rom again or stock kernel will un-root, there is the issue of the binary counter though which can only be reset with a usb jig. Whether repair companies actually check this is questionable, though.
 
Personally I'd root, uninstall the swype that's on there and install the latest beta version which is far better than what's on as stock.

Also if you're having trouble with it mess with the settings for speed vs accuracy. Makes it much better for me onces sliding more towards accuracy.

Check stock FW version first as the 2.3.4 update comes with new bootloader which prevents the jib from resetting the counter.
 
Just got it, upgraded from a desire.

Love the speed etc and the build, shape.

However:

1) Clock widget - clicking it doesn't take you to the clock/alarm app. Infuriating.
2) Browser - no text reflow. I've installed opera but I prefer the normal browser, it's just annoyingly unusable without proper reflow on pinch-to-zoom.
3) Keyboard - no punctuation behind all keys, they're all behind the full stop which makes it really slow, particularly to type with commas.
4) Keyboard - the prediction bar appears and disappears as you type causing you the screen above to jump around which is distracting.
5) having to type out times for alarms or click +/- buttons is properly slow compared to spinning the wheel with sense.

Anyone got any solutions? I've installed opera browser and touchpal keyboard which fix it a bit but they aren't perfect imo.

I'm most interested in:
A fix to the browser text reflow, or a better browser than opera.
A htc sense-like keyboard.
A decent clock widget that links to the clock app.

I hide the default clock, and use it to display the date and time in large font on my homescreen. Tapping it takes me quickly to my alarms.

A bit of thought would have helped you realise those uses.
