****The Official Samsung Galaxy S II Thread***

My contract runs out in Januray so am looking to change phone. Currently have an iPhone 4 and before that a 3gs, but I've always wanted to try Android. Seeing as the 4s doesn't excite me, now is a good time to try I think.

How well has the SGS2 held its value?

For those of you who have owned both iPhone and Android (unbiased views only please) how do you find the app store?

What is the the music player and the phone like in general to the iPhone?

Is there software similar to iTunes available for seamless integration with your music library?

Has there been a successor to the SGS2 announced that perhaps I should wait for?

Cheers.
Egon

Over the air updates do not wipe anything.

Thanks kitch, that's a relief.

This is what I got. I thought it might also update Android but it hasn't. What benefits can I expect from the updated Gingerbread XWKF3?

Hi guys, received my phone yesterday, downloaded most common apps such ass: skype, FB, bay, angry birds, etc.

Want to find app "FOLDER LOCK/APP LOCK" to set password to: messaging, contacts, gallery, etc. even tho I found and they work, however it is easy to close program through task manager without entering password, tried: app lock, king kong...

Any other options?

Merlin5, OTA updates depend entirely on what your carrier is pushing at the time. if you want the latest stock firmware you will have to download it and flash manually.

cant remember but bare in mind kf3 was release in early june - it's 3 months old already.

Ah right, thanks james. Actually someone on xda said to me "Put it on KIES ..... Should update to KI4 IF its XEU" . So I used Kies for the first time now that I have wifi at home. It told me to type a url into my PC browser and then I saw all my phone stuff on the PC monitor. But I don't have a clue what K14 or XEU is or how to update it with Kies. Would this involve what you were you saying about downloading and flashing manually, or should it be some other auto thing?

Awesome! Thanks. Just checked out the tutorial, looks a piece of cake to backup and restore and do the update. This still won't update android right, just firmware?

The firmware is Android.... different firmwares can contain different Versions of android and modems.

for example, KF3 contains 2.3.3 Gingerbread.
KI4 contains 2.3.4 gingerbread.

Well in that case, that's great if it updates android. What about what james was saying though about downloading and flashing manually? Does this mean I can just let Kies do it? And although I'll do the backup first, will it change anything like my launcher pro, like, will it reset it to default wizwhateveritscalled? Sorry for all the ultra noobish questions! :p

The downloading and flashing manually is mainly for unbranded stock firmwares or custom firmwares.

Updating via kies is super simple and safe (but so is the way james said tbh, but this is "official" way) but it will only update to the latest firmware that your carrier has released.

I just updated mine via kies on Three network and got gingerbread 2.3.4. However, 2.3.5 is the newest version and so i could get that with the method james described.

Edit: Oh and no nothing at all will change when updating via Kies, apart from the firmware ofc!

Thanks very much for explaining that Greenia, puts my mind at rest and Kies will make things nice and easy. I'll go ahead and do that now. :)

Yay, I got 2.3.4 now.

It wasn't without it's problems though. Several times it would not connect when I connected the phone to kies and had to reinstall the drivers. The most worrying time was this

And on the phone was the green android and a message saying "do not disconnect target!!". After disconnecting, fortunately it rebooted normally and nothing on the phone had changed. So I followed the instructions, and it went through the whole re-downloading of the firmware, and all went well in the end. Phew!

Yeah I found Kies to be a bit dodgy, especially with backing stuff up, sometimes it wouldnt work.

Yeah, it took a while to backup and was going well until the last thing, call logs, then it stopped responding. So I rebooted the pc and just backed up the call logs as everything else was backed up. Not very reliable is it. Still, it worked in the end thank goodness.

To be honest the only reason this phone is any good is because of google android - Samsung will never learn from previous mistakes on older phones. How they cant fix dodgy PC software is beyond me, the bugs are evident, widespread and common.

Before this phone I had the samsung Omnia and that was horrific. I swore never to buy another samsung phone. But this phone was too good to pass.

Glad I got this phone though, its very good. So good actually that I find myself trying to think of stuff to do with the phone just so I can use it more!

Isn't that the most obvious thing ever?

The same applies to a lot of other brand phones as well.
