Running Report – 6 months with the Boxster S.

Yep ive seen the white one aswell, not seen the cobra yet though, going to have to look out for it!

I see it all the time and live only about a mile from the hospital (thorpe hall avenue), really want to know more about it as it is a rare and beautiful car, and if it is a rep it is done incredibly well.

Ditto - had no idea about this, is my 3.4 987 Boxster S effected and how likely am I to suffer?

And here I was thinking that the only things to worry about are IMS and RMS issues. Any idea on the numbers of cars affected by these issues?

This link suggests that the 997/987 are effected but seemingly this has been happening on low millage cars.

I just tend to ignore stuff like this, I've got a warranty so I'm paying to have the privilege of not needing to worry quite so much as yourself!

Aye im not all that fussed as the car has now covered a staggering 51k and any major engine issues should have reared their ugly head already. Looking through those posts most are happening <30k miles.

Thought I would post again in here as I have just spent more money on it today to stop more squeeks at the front end. Anti roll bar bushes this time... Another £100 odd quid to keep myself sane. Does feel really tight at the front now and no annoying squeaks. Apparantly they wern't excesively perished just squeeking and a tad perished so I opted for replacement polly bushes. Also had the gearbox inspected and am happy to report back that the crunchyness when cold is apparantly an issue with the clutch rather than the box and can wait until the clutch is bust to be repaired. My mechanic tells me I now have a very sorted car that will not require any work at all in the next 12-24 months.

Lets see shall we?

Check for smoking, high oil consumption on that engine can be early signs of bore scoring, so check for any smoking.

If it is then get it too Porsche and make things out to be far worse than they are or take it to specialist and get bores 5 and 6 inspected for scoring.

My car was taken for service today. Watching it being revved from outside made me realise it smoked far more than I realised on startup. They mentioned popping a camera in to check for bore-scoring, after seeing the smoke, so hopefully not going to need to go through weeks of oil usage monitoring before they do anything. Car in warranty and bought from porsche 6 months ago, so i`m hoping everything (bar service) will be covered!

*edit* ill update when i hear anything

I had to spend a fair bit on mine in the first year (about £2k on suspension, aircon...the usual stuff to bring it up to scratch)

Just took it for service and MOT yesterday (a year after having all the work done) and this time it didnt require anything at all. All its cost me in the last 12 months is a windscreen washer motor (about £15) and brakes (which are consumables I'd already budgeted for) They did say that 3 coil packs are cracked, which was also flagged last year, but they said to ignore it unless I get a misfire.

Whole car feels very tight when driving - you'd never think it was 10 years old (other than the dated interior) - I drive the car pretty hard too :)

Sounds like im just repeating what you have already been through. Mine doesn't use a ton of oil but at the same time its hardly a saint with it, it used approx .5 of a litre over 6.5k miles. Which doesn't sound too bad to me.

Ouch sorry to hear that mate, sounds like these newer engines have less issues with RMS/IMS but have other issues with the bores. What’s funny is that the explanation I was given by my specialist is as follows:

Due to the layout of the boxer engine ie: Flat and horizontally opposed, the oil doesn’t drain out of the bores as it would in a vertical cylinder layout therefore it is by the very nature of the engine that from time to time it will spit smoke out of the back that has collected in the bores and not drained out.

Sounds feasible?

These are the exact reasons why I will be keeping mine under warranty without question. If I can't have a cast iron warranty on it, then it'll go.

Warranty is for the wimps :P and sensible people. If I would have been on the ball I could have put a dealer warranty on mine. Sadly on December the 21st (must have been a Christmas prezzy) mine is 10 years old and will not qualify for main dealer warranty.

Yes and no. Normal is to have some slight smoke on start up that lasts a few seconds and clears at idle. If you have bore problems, the engine spits out smoke heavy exhaust fumes for longer and particularly when you rev it after starting, which normal cars won't do (regardless of piston orientation).

They smoke like this if there is bore damage:

Mine is not close to that bad at idle, but gets fairly close on being revved.
Im still waiting to hear anything from the garage. I`m off this week and next friday, so hopefully it can be sorted quickly. *crosses fingers*

Im always in the drivers seat so don't notice, but from checking the exhaust note thread it appears that mine doesn't smoke from cold. However it did give a little puff a few k ago which i saw rise up over the back.

So whats a worst case if you have damage then? can they bore these out wth oversized pistons or is it a new block?

Good question. I`m honestly not sure. I still haven't heard back from porsche to authorise any further work, so really not sure what has happened or if they will want to bring it back separately to service to investigate.

Would be interested if you do find out. Or if anybody else knows the answer. Keep us updated on your car is always interesting to know these things. :)

They didn't do any further investigations in to the oil use. They want me to monitor the oil usage and call them. With my current usage it:

A) won't take long to have to call them
B) won't last 1000 miles before needing oil added

They are very upfront about the fact that they think there is an issue that needs addressing and that they expect it back for further work, bit gutted that they didnt just investigate and keep it now because i`m off for the week and don't need my car.

I`ll update the thread with further information as I get it (though wont be for a few weeks).

Not really worthy of a new thread but thought I'd add a bit about insuring a Boxster S.

I took out my policy when I was 21 and the cost was £1200 give or take a few pounds.

That was me, and my 50 year old mum on the policy, I've just had to add my girlfriend (28) as I'm not able to drive for a while due to knee reconstructive surgery and they charged £17.50 right through till May next year.

Well chuffed, in terms of insurance quotes compared to other cars stuff like an RX-8 and 350Z were all a few hundred quid more. A 911 turbo was only coming in at £1800 a year though and I do have a very good post code (GU21).

Brave man... you trust her with your car?

Cool, I look forward to the outcome. Got a friend coming up tonight and my car hasn't been driven for a good few days so I am going to get them to start it and rev it while I take a look at the exhaust and smoke.
