Yep ive seen the white one aswell, not seen the cobra yet though, going to have to look out for it!
Ditto - had no idea about this, is my 3.4 987 Boxster S effected and how likely am I to suffer?
I just tend to ignore stuff like this, I've got a warranty so I'm paying to have the privilege of not needing to worry quite so much as yourself!
Check for smoking, high oil consumption on that engine can be early signs of bore scoring, so check for any smoking.
If it is then get it too Porsche and make things out to be far worse than they are or take it to specialist and get bores 5 and 6 inspected for scoring.
Thought I would post again in here as I have just spent more money on it today to stop more squeeks at the front end. Anti roll bar bushes this time... Another £100 odd quid to keep myself sane. Does feel really tight at the front now and no annoying squeaks. Apparantly they wern't excesively perished just squeeking and a tad perished so I opted for replacement polly bushes. Also had the gearbox inspected and am happy to report back that the crunchyness when cold is apparantly an issue with the clutch rather than the box and can wait until the clutch is bust to be repaired. My mechanic tells me I now have a very sorted car that will not require any work at all in the next 12-24 months.
Lets see shall we?
I had to spend a fair bit on mine in the first year (about £2k on suspension, aircon...the usual stuff to bring it up to scratch)
My car was taken for service today. Watching it being revved from outside made me realise it smoked far more than I realised on startup. They mentioned popping a camera in to check for bore-scoring, after seeing the smoke, so hopefully not going to need to go through weeks of oil usage monitoring before they do anything. Car in warranty and bought from porsche 6 months ago, so i`m hoping everything (bar service) will be covered!
*edit* ill update when i hear anything
These are the exact reasons why I will be keeping mine under warranty without question. If I can't have a cast iron warranty on it, then it'll go.
Ouch sorry to hear that mate, sounds like these newer engines have less issues with RMS/IMS but have other issues with the bores. What’s funny is that the explanation I was given by my specialist is as follows:
Due to the layout of the boxer engine ie: Flat and horizontally opposed, the oil doesn’t drain out of the bores as it would in a vertical cylinder layout therefore it is by the very nature of the engine that from time to time it will spit smoke out of the back that has collected in the bores and not drained out.
Sounds feasible?
Im always in the drivers seat so don't notice, but from checking the exhaust note thread it appears that mine doesn't smoke from cold. However it did give a little puff a few k ago which i saw rise up over the back.
So whats a worst case if you have damage then? can they bore these out wth oversized pistons or is it a new block?
Couldn't afford a proper 911
... snip...
That was me, and my 50 year old mum on the policy, I've just had to add my girlfriend (28) as I'm not able to drive for a while due to knee reconstructive surgery and they charged £17.50 right through till May next year.
They didn't do any further investigations in to the oil use. They want me to monitor the oil usage and call them. With my current usage it:
A) won't take long to have to call them
B) won't last 1000 miles before needing oil added
They are very upfront about the fact that they think there is an issue that needs addressing and that they expect it back for further work, bit gutted that they didnt just investigate and keep it now because i`m off for the week and don't need my car.
I`ll update the thread with further information as I get it (though wont be for a few weeks).
