Dark Souls (Demon's Souls 2)

Guys, is there a specific strat behind pulling off backstabs?

I never seem to get them?

Not played since the weekend and my net is down at the moment, so simply going to get the Havel ring and thats it tonight :)

seems to work more for me if my shield is'nt up, usual thing is, shield down, roll then move behind back and quickly stab R1/right bumper, sometimes works sometimes does'nt.

maybe more dex helps?

Not really, like Demon's Souls you have to stand EXACTLY behind the enemy in a tiny sweet spot when you strike. Annoying as hell but pretty satisfying when you get your stabbing on :D

Give it time, it'll suck you in and refuse to let go until you've given it a damn good thrashing (or you cry off like a little girl :p) ;)

I know games like these are slow burners to begin with like Oblivion or Fallout etc but in this its just the harsh difficulty. It wouldn't be so bad if the enemies didn't respawn every time you touch a bonfire. I can't quite see the point of that yet.

It's the whole risk/reward thing really - do you push on past the bonfire and hope to make it to the next without dying, or do you light it and then fight past the enemies again. If you're going through a level though, you should only have to fight the few enemies around the bonfire again before carrying on.

Well, if you were to play it though, come to the end of the game, you have completed all areas, no mobs left to kill, you are level 90 out of 145...

How do you expect to progress?

Also, you are level 15 in the current area which you are now comfortable with, you have an option to further where the mobs slate you... You simply stick to your current area running through the mobs over and over and over again to increase your level...

Simples :)

So its mainly just for grinding purposes?

I think maybe you should be given a choice in the options whether you want to have respawning enemies or not. Maybe I'll change the way I feel after another few sessions but the whole enemy respawn just feels daft at the moment and sort of spoils the immersion.

I haven't played dark souls but I've been considering going back to demon souls as I didn't quite "get" it the first time around, is anyone else warming up more to this style of game that didn't necessarily enjoy it in the first game?

I'm hearing a lot of good things and it makes me want to try demons souls again but im scared! :(

it seems the amount of grinding you do is really the difficulty slider, more you do and level up easier the game gets but saying that even at high levels i find DeS and DS very hard, love em though.

It's not just for grinding, it's for difficulty. Dark Souls is an unashamedly difficult game, and makes no apologies for it. That's why there are no options to change things. The game gives you a challenge, and it's up to you to beat it.

I know you're right but from my point of view I usually play games where, even when difficult, you feel you are making progress. It doesn't seem like I am making progress or even levelling up here.

Do you keep your xp to count towards levelling up even if you die, I know you lose souls (unless you recover) but what about XP? That's the only way I can see it would be reasonable to have respawning enemies in that you are making progress level wise even if not by location. Last night I seemed to be on lvl 5 for AGES! :D I think I still am.

The souls you collect are basically your xp, you spend the souls at a campfire to level up.

You kill enemies for souls, return to the campfire to spend them and level up, they re-spawn and you repeat the process moving further into the zone / level each time until you unlock short cuts or are confident enough to progress onto the next bonfire / kill a demon.

Arse! I feared it was that way. That meant I wasn't getting anywhere last night as I suspected because I kept dying and then re-dying before I could recover. That sucks!

whats the story like or is it typical Japanese confusing bull?

Like Demon Souls the game doesn't really have an in depth story as such, you get a very basic background intro and some lore about the world your playing in and thats it. To be honest most of it is left to your own interpretation which for me suits the play of the game perfectly.

Having a massive in depth story with various arcs and twists would totally ruin the game.

I imagine that it would, looking forward to picking it up when I get home tonight. Any tips for a new player? Never played demons souls before so dont really have a clue
