Even if she sorts out the fact she doesn't sing all that well, she has to address the fact that sings in such a broad accent that she makes it unlistenable.
As ever, beauty is in the eye... ok, ear of the beholder. I suspect Janet's coaches are encouraging her to emphasise her accent in a way which was less blatantly obvious in the original audition. However it still adds a great "flavour" to the songs, as many of us appear to agree.
Whether that flavour will get a bit repetitive is a different matter. But I'm guessing it won't unless this series goes to penalties and lasts until Easter.
As for Janet's ability to sing... well, much though I hate to agree with Gary Barlow, and although I like nothing more than being a contrarian under normal circumstances, I have to agree with him when he says he believes whatever she sings. That's what marks out a great singer for me, not whether she can hit every note perfectly. That'll come in time (I've got socks older than her!) and she has the same kind of vulnerable talent which impressed me so much when I first saw Laura Marling on Later for the first time.
Mind you, anyone who can go through a week like that and not sob when the pressure's released is a
far tougher cookie than me. So I may be on the wrong track with the vulnerability thing.
Anyway, last year I stopped paying attention to X-Factor after Gamu went out; hers was the only voice to reach out to me. This year I'm sticking with Janet and Scouse Lad as the only people who've persuaded me to listen to all their performances without hitting the FFWD button. I'm hoping at least one of them goes all the way. Heck, I may even break my rules and vote for one of them at this rate.
This week I've even tempted to vote for Kitty. Not because I want her to win, but because I don't want her to be the first one to go out on a public vote. Her eye make-up may scare me, but Johnny's voice gives me nightmares, and I value my sleep.
