I think because its internal communication the x4/x4 is less of a problem than if it was x4/x4 on separate cards.

i've been looking at a Asrock Z68 Extreme4 Gen3 board, it looks like it has everything i need on it , what do u guys think?

but would i need new ram? because mine need 1.7v for stock settings 1600 7-7-7-20

I wouldn't do anything over 1.65v on SB.

Make sure it supports tri-fire if you are going to run that 6990+6950, remember the 6990 is treated as crossfire, so if the board doesn't support it, it wont work.

hey gareth - just got mine literally setup - still installing drivers etc:

So far so good - I like the UEFI bios and its simplicity. Will report back once its setup in a couple of days as I gotta shoot to birmingham 2nite

Board's fine, 1.5v sounds fine at 1600 CL9.

Make sure it supports tri-fire if you are going to run that 6990+6950, remember the 6990 is treated as crossfire, so if the board doesn't support it, it wont work.

The Crossfire on a 6990 is internal, it doesn't make a difference if the board doesn't support Crossfire, although in this case he needs Crossfire support obviously as he's doing two cards, although not "tri-fire", as that's just a crossfire configuration, 3 way is it not?

Yes it's worth it, you should see an improvement in game frame rates easily.

1090T at 4GHz to 2600k at 4.5GHz, not a huge amount for gaming if at all in terms of framerate, 5-10% max? Certainly not £450 worth.
