Hard Drive Pricing going up at an alarming rate!!!!

NOTICE

Hard drives set to increase another 10-20% by the end of the week!!!!

Massive pricing on HDD now and re-buys are starting to come in at ridiculous costs :(

Does anyone have any idea how long the price increases will last? e.g. start to come down after Christmas? Back to normal by Easter?

If anyone tries to give you a definitive answer they will only be speculating. Personally i very much doubt that production and supply will be up to speed long enough for prices to drop to where they were for quite a number of months.

LOL...

I keep reading through this thread and seeing the usual "funny how prices go up near christmas" and such.

Your on the internet, google is your friend.

Im amased at how anyone could posibly not see that there is indeed and issue and that Christmas has got nothing to do with it.

Like Andrew, I also work in the industry. The fact is, several massive HDD brand factories have been utterly trashed by floods ruining MASSIVE amounts of stock. (When you consider the dust free environments they have to be produced in due to the fact that a head hitting a tiny spec of dust on a platter spinning at 7200/ 10,000 RPM is akin to a train hitting a brick wall at 500MPH, its easy to see the EPIC proportions of the damage a shedload of water carrying all manner of dust, grit and other debris will cause.) In addition, nearby factories who manufacture the smaller components that go into major brand hard disks have also been trashed. It will be Q1 before we start seeing any improvement. Its a case of "poo" happens and the basic economics of supply and demand. Nothing to do an infant being born in a barn 2000 odd years ago.:D

I'm ******, basically. I was going to start ordering a load of 2TB ones for my HP microserver soon but at current prices, let alone what they're going to end up being over the next few weeks/months I feel like I can't justify getting them at all. Bad times.

Seeing competitors pushing 2TB towards £130-£150 now, think this will be widespread by next week - BAD TIMES.

Well, I was looking at buying a WD10EARS, guess I aint anymore! Bought one in May for £45 inc :o

Wow...

I wonder if WD will consider adding a second supply line to their manufacturing operations!?

Edit:

Any stock in the factories would have been in their sealed air-tight bags, they can be still used, surely...

Thanks to OCUK for the warning on prices - I ordered a 3TB drive just before prices started to go up.

I've got a spreadsheet that I keep updated with serial nos and warranty details. If it makes anyone feel any better, my first 1TB drive cost me £179.76 in December 2007 .

HUMPH!

Just had a Seagate 2tb barracuda green [st2000dl03] arrive.

It says "The Contents is Made in China" on the bag seal!

So why have THESE gone up?

Basic supply and demand. Less supply to meet the demand will mean prices rise.

However that aside as I understand it at least one the factories flooded was actually manufacturing the motors for hard drives not the whole unit it's self ...but weather the final product is assembled in China or Stow-on-the-Wold ...if the supply of components is short then there is going to be a supply shortage again.

Oh I just noticed an OcUK banner for the WD Green 2TB drive at the top of the page, so I clicked it to find out what they are now and as little as makes no difference 100 quid! ...ouch. That's getting on for doubling in price in a week.

Thankfully, I bought a NAS a few weeks ago with 3 Seagate 2TB drives which cost £55 each - now they are nearly double!

Received my Seagate 1TB replacement drive and it's a repaired unit, guess even they don't have the stock to fulfil RMA's.

So HD's from all manufacturers are suddenly made in this one area?

Prices on existing stock go up? Supply and demand, also known as suppliers/retailers making an extra buck or two when they can...
