Greatest FPS and why?

TF2 has been out for over 4 years now and the player base has only ever increased, especially in the last few months

CS hasn't been the top game on steam for a while now, Here are todays stats, the table goes current players, Peak players, Game name :-

50,922 71,082 Team Fortress 2
50,306 66,419 Football Manager 2012
39,235 67,244 Counter-Strike
33,941 56,328 Counter-Strike: Source
21,425 24,850 Sid Meier's Civilization V
18,001 19,270 Dungeon Defenders
14,936 30,619 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - Multiplayer
12,881 15,091 Left 4 Dead 2
10,909 18,352 Call of Duty Black Ops - Multiplayer
8,295 10,998 Football Manager 2011

I don't know what has happened in the past week or so but CS is always around 67k peak and is normally top dawg maybe new hats released in tf2?

Yes tf2 has been out since 2007 and this confirms my point. It's not long(compared to cs, tfc, quake is essentially the same)and there isn't an alternative. Wait until 2019 when there is a tf3 or tf4 by then and see how many ppl play it.

Like I said, if you don't know by now...... You never will. :)

Battlefield 3 probably :)

haha - has it gone down that badly? I've not really read steam/origin forums in a while.

One other point about TF2 by the way - let's not forget that it's now F2P so that's it going to artificially inflate the stats a fair bit. It wasn't top dog before being F2P. All this hats and trading nonesense was created to keep the playerbase interested. All dem Russian hax0rs messing up the stats...

Loved Quake 2 online. Spent a good 4-5 years playing pretty much only that in Clans, 4v4DMs, Rocket Arena, CTF, King of the Hill and what-not.

Still miss it.

Single player? Farcry was great imo, as was Half-Life.

Had most fun online playing clanned Quake2, TFC & CS1.6

Difficult to say a single player game as I don't actually play that many. Probably Half-Life though

Half Life - anyone who says different should have their posting permissions revoked. Anyone who mentions Halo should be killed. Also TF2 is an abomination. Whoever thought getting backstabbed by an invisible opponent or luckbox killed by a random crit could be frustrating? TFC was so much better, it was pure skill and as a result not frustrating in the slightest when you got owned.

MP: For me it's simple - TFC. No game has the manoevrability that TFC offers, the skill ceiling is like no other game out there.

Meh. TFC was for n00bs compared to the original TF. Things like conc jumps became way too easy. No timing involved at all.

I don't have a "best" or one favourite FPS, so i'll just list a few.

CoD & CoD:UO
CoD:MW2
Counterstrike Source
Halo
BF2142
BF3
Doom3
Left4Dead 1&2 (If that counts)

Goldeneye
Perfect Dark
Timesplitters 1 & 2

Spent a lot of time with UT2004, Quake 1 & 3 and NOLF / AVP in the early days. Haven't really played FPS much since then.

I don't get the whole CS thing. I havn't played an FPS on my PC for years but downloaded Steam onto this PC and noticed I had bought CS in 2007 (total play time was 20 minutes).

I thought I'd give it a go... graphics are poor, sound effects are even worse and the maps are tiny.

COD is infinately better than that tripe.

Anyone order the side of Troll to go with this thread?

It was a revolution when it was released - highly structured multiplayer. Before CS it was mainly DM, TDM and CTF.

With regards to the graphics and sound, it's a old game by now, you expect BF3 standard graphics?! The maps are small, there's no vehicles so everything boils down to players. Massive maps won't just work, you'd spend half of the time walking around (one of my gripes with BF series) and CS is all about speed (round time from 2-5 minutes).

greatest for me is RTCW - it defined objective, class-based online shooting.

Absolute classic maps - can still remember them now (as opposed to any recent CoD/BF maps, I honestly couldn't tell you the names of any of them).

Was really disappointed by the remake - I just wanted the old maps upscaled for HD. Instead we got a laggy, terribad game :(

Online: Unreal Tournament
Single Player: I think i have to say my favorite was cod4 for sheer action packed awesomeness, i really loved it for some reason
hl2+ep2 as a close seconds

No doubt it moved the FPS scene forward but the title of the thread isn't "Name the FPS to have moved the genre forward".

By today's standards I wouldn't call CS "great" by any means. I assume the people mentioning it are basing it on nostalgia or their time invested.
