Some people think it's pefectly legal to run lights on a bike.

It isn't even close in terms of numbers. As a pedestrian I am less worried about cars even though they would kill me. Cars can be predicted whilst cyclists could do absolutely anything.

As a driver cyclists are much much more frequently reckless.

Try being a cyclist and see what you think of the cars...

Go up on the pavement and around the traffic lights.

Guilty of doing this one... Saying that, I get off the bike and dismount. I've got a crossing on the way to uni where I have to take a bike short cut. Only walk on the pavement pushing bike, don't actually cycle on the pavement.

Unfortunately there are several cyclists who give us all a bad name. But then, there are plenty of cars that run red lights or speed up through ambers.
Made up statistic is made up.

This is so true... In the last two weeks I've almost been hit about 3/4 times by cars basically not paying any attention to me..

As somebody who can and does drive, I find it shocking that people can be so unobservant of cyclists... Don't get me wrong, most drivers are fine, however there are a few drivers who are right ****... Can say the same about cyclists though, some are right ****** on the road... Goes both ways though.

Cyclists are a pain anywhere!! They should be made to pay road tax, have insurance and MOT for bikes. Abide by the highway code (Like car drivers!!lol).

It amazes me when a cyclist wizzes in and out of the traffic, weaving from lane to lane, undertaking, going through red lights, mounting pavements etc and they gets peeved when a motorist does something they dont like!! Bunch of utter monkies they are!

I always stop them from undertaking me!!

Ah wow, it took 56 replies to mention road tax. We just need Hitler now.

And as usual, a motorist who doesn't have a clue about the highway code.

If you know the code then why dont you help the poster above you?

All cyclists should pay some type of road tax. You use the roads so you should be made to pay like motorists do.

Are you simple?

I already pointed out that 'Road Tax' is charged on an emissions basis. You want us to pay 'Road Tax'? Fine. My Annual payment is £0. Just like certain cars.

It pains me to think that people so clueless about the highway code and motoring taxation laws are actually allowed to drive. Really it does.

I cycle 50 miles a week as my commute to work and it's extremely rare that I'll jump a red light.

I'd say I was extremely considerate as a cyclist and go out of my way to be as unobtrusive as possible to motorists, but I do see instances of cyclists being selfish or inconsiderate.

These are what I'd say are the main annoyances.

1. Cyclists taking too much of the road. - I tow the yellow lines and take up hardly any space, but see too many tools wavering a thirdway across the road riding at 5mph holding up traffic.
I take issue with this. Mainly because as you claim to be a cyclist, you must have had experience of poor road surfaces, often this is worst at the edge, so cycling on the yellow lines is not always an option. Added to the fact that the highway code stipulates that you should take a road position that makes you feel confident, a cyclist is well within his rights to cycle in the middle of the lane.

Agreed that you should make way for traffic behind you, but only when its safe to do so.

2. Cyclists going too slow. I average 15 mph when commuting - if there's no space to pass me you won't have to slow down too much or wait too long to do so.
Aye well I think that annoys everyone :p.

3. Racer cyclists riding along side by side chatting. I've seen this during rush hour times, taking up half the road, maybe averaging 18 mph but totally blocking the 30mph traffic.
As above really, riding two abreast is absolutely fine if done so to make yourself feel safe. In this case, yeah its not on. However, riding side by side whilst actually cycling properly (eg 25mph), then fine.

3. Cyclists riding along in pitch darkness without lights. Far, far too many people do this, it's an utterly crazy thing to do.
Agreed.

But on the positive side, most cyclists I see are in good physical shape and are unlikely to be burdening the NHS with obesity related diseases.

Motorists on the other hand - the amount of fat, single occupants of vehicles, smoking fags whilst pootling along making the 5 minute drive to the supermarket that they could easily walk. Well let's just say we'll likely all be paying for their irresponsible laziness in years to come.

There is also the fact that when commuting 90% of people are the sole occupants of sometimes very large vehicles - there is an environmental impact too that can't be denied.
Interesting point of view. I'm sure plenty of healthy people drive though.

I cycle to work a fair bit and cyclists who jump lights really wind me up. I always stop at the lights even if it's safe for me to carry on going. I would have to stop in a car so I don't see why its any different on a bike

Cars that have run red lights and almost killed me while cycling this year: 2.

Cyclists that have run red lights and almost killed me this year: 0.

forget tax, they should be made to pay insurance. Why is it that if a cyclist smashes into my car its tough for me, but if i smash into a cyclist i get taken to the cleaners ?

Actually nearly hit a few cyclists a few times due to them running lights. Idiotic really, if they can't follow the rules of the road then they shouldn't be on the road.

Thing is, cyclist, have their own rules!! Its to hell with everyone else on the road, we can do what we like! :D (Obviously, i am not a cyclist these days)

cambridge is pretty bad for cyclists and ignoring traffic rules; the amount of times one of the ****s have crashed into me whilst i've been walking down a pedestrianised area is ridiculous!

And why should we? You don't pay road tax, you pay 'My car kills the atmosphere' tax. My bike doesn't contribute to global warming so why should I pay anything?

Because you use the roads! Simple

Plus you should be made to pay insurance like every other road user
