Surely the "next generation" must be due?

To be honest, I think it will take more than just a graphics upgrade to sell a new console. Look at the PS2 compared to the PS3 and ignore graphics for a second. The PS3 added wireless controllers out of the box, a hardrive, a full online service, game updates and console updates, proper support for big HDTVs. Last gen look pretty bad on a 42" so it was something that was needed. And a blu-ray drive. That's quite a bit of an upgrade. I'd say that the next console will need to have full 3D support. Remember that if they get released in 2014 which seems the most popular guess, they will be in use well into the 2020s. There isn't really a standard for 3DTV just yet and it's possible that once a standard is reached, it will be completely incompatable with any 3DTV released so far. I'd also say that Sony/MS are keeping a keen eye on broadband speeds with a view to an online only console. Imagine being able to download any game in an hour and play it for free for an hour then having the option to delete or buy/unlock. Imagine being able to pay to have an additional hour without buying the game. If someone at work asked you to play a game online that evening, you would never have to say that you don't own that game. You can have your free hour and, if you want, pay for an extra hour. If then you decide that you want to buy/unlock the game, you get the hour refunded. Imagine if you had the option to pay a monthly subscription and have full access to all games whenever you want. It works for Sky and it's the same thing in many ways. It's a box that goes under your TV from an entertainment company that wants your money and you also want the product.

Its already here and its called Onlive. http://www.onlive.com/

i could say the same about the people who i know play mario, zelda etc and use their wii. If so many are unused how come games sales are still so high on their big titles? and how come their games still command full retail price over a year after launch if they are not selling?
You cant say the majority of wiis are unused when games sales on big titles dwarf the other platforms.
My gaming is 60-40 in favour of the xbox but thats only due to online gaming.

I never said the games are not selling, I've seen the sales figures and know full well how well some Wii software has sold almost all of which is first party.

The Wii has sold nearly (now probably surpassed) 90 million units and the big franchises have sold sometimes in excess of 20 million copies. That isn't a number to be sniffed at.

These are the numbers for WW sales as of the end of March.
Wii Sports (76.76 million)[74]
Mario Kart Wii (28.23 million)[75]
Wii Sports Resort (27.68 million)[74]
Wii Play (27.38 million)[76]
Wii Fit (22.61 million)[76]
New Super Mario Bros. Wii (21.94 million)[74]
Wii Fit Plus (18.49 million)[74]
Super Smash Bros. Brawl (9.48 million)[76]
Super Mario Galaxy (8.84 million)[77]
Mario Party 8 (7.6 million)[78]
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (7.09 million)[79]
Super Mario Galaxy 2 (6.36 million)[74]
Wii Party (5.77 million)[74]
Just Dance 2 (5 million)[80]

I'm not saying it wont sell because I am not a moron, Nintendo will release a Mario and a Zelda and maybe even a console Pokemon and it'll sell like hotcakes, I just think they MIGHT get burned on SOME customers who bought the Wii haven't used it and so don't see the need for the WiiU.

As I said, its anecdotal based on the 4 people I know. I don;t claim to know the other 90 million people that own one whether they use it or not.

Microsoft XMAS 2013, Sony XMAS 2014

i reckon that will be the dates.

consoles usually last a very long time before the next gen comes out, i hope they pack the consoles with RAM, HDD and a top CPU, electronics are so cheap thee days, i want them fully loaded with the best.

i got 8GB of top ram for like £50 earlier on in the year. so i would expect 2GB minimum tbh.

ps3 only had 512mb (shared between graphics and game).

 If they only put 2GB in by 2013, I'll be a bit miffed.

consoles have always had a lot less RAM than PC's.

2GB would be amazing, it would open the console scene right up.

im meaning 2GB for system only, i want the graphics card to have 512MB-1GB as well.

that would be 6 times what the PS3 has currently.

I'd hope for 4GB to be shared. :D

i highly doubt they would put that much in, their development costs are huge and they usually make a loss on the console side, they do this to regain the money lost through the sale of software.

so they try and keep the costs down as low as possible. its only when they start making newer models of the console, development costs are significantly lowered and then they start breaking even on consoles. then usually by the 2nd revised model they make a modest profit.

2.5 - 3 GB is the best thing to hope for, if its 4GB that will be a bonus. but they may even surprise you and only stick 2GB in it.

Anyone reckon they might be pushed back a bit because of the current HDD stock/price problem caused by the floods?

http://www.bit-tech.net/news/hardware/2011/11/07/hard-disk-component-supply-could-take-years/1

Unless ofcourse they are planning on putting SSD's in there :D

no chance, they use 2.5" HDD's for a start, in the ps3 anyway, so the markets are completely different.

also that issue will be soon resolved within a 6 month timeframe. consoles arent due for another 2 years. in 2 years time you should be able to get 1TB for £40.

The Wii console sales figures have to be taken with a pinch of salt.

It was the most sought after 'toy' for more than two Christmas' being a sell out that was difficult to even get hold off. Everyone bought one, especially people who don't usually play games, hell even my parents have one.

That's where the problem lies, loads of people have bought one, but they've not necessarily bought many games for it. You only need to look at actual games sales figures to see how much better the Xbox and Playstation do on multi-platform titles, despite the Wii having a bigger user base.

This is clearly the main reason Nintendo is releasing the Wii-U, because people just aren't buying the games for the Wii anymore as it feels quite dated, especially with the Kinect and Move. I've not even used my Wii since I bought Kinect 12 months ago and I barely used it before that either.

Dont forget that your "top" ram was DDR3. Consoles do not use DDR2/3 ram so it costs them more per GB

As soon as SSDs are the same price they'll do that. It's possible that maybe in the later revisions of the PS4 X720 you MIGHT get an SSD model but I really doubt it.

because multi platform games generally arent very good on wii. Look at mario bros, mario kart, donkey kong and the up and coming zelda, they dwarf the sales figures on the xbox and ps3 top sellers.
Kinect really isnt that big 10million copies of kinect sports and thats bundled with the hardware.

The games you've highlighted above are few and far between though, first party Nintendo games, they will always be popular.

Amazon had a 1TB drive for £46 recently, been like that for months and finally went to buy it today and it's >£70!! Missed the boat there.

I have no interest in a next gen console anytime soon. I'll also be waiting at least 1 year after release to buy it.

I still think the current consoles offer plenty of great things, gaming or otherwise so I'm quite happy to keep this going for another few years.

Planning to buy the Vita though, for certain and that will keep me ticking over for a long long time coupled with the 360 for online gaming with friends, and PS3 for pretty much everything else - then PC for exclusives that offers.

I just don't see any major incentive for companies to bring out the next generation in the near future.

I'd be content with 2015...but it'll no doubt be before then.

I just hope they don't all go 3D and OTT with motion technology - or i'm out of the game. I hate both those techs, they ruin games for me.

Nintendo has always known how to make the most out of their own hardware as 3rd party devs can’t be bothered, partly due to the controller. But they did achieve their goal and that was to get non gamers to play games in a family environment. Sales may have dropped now but it lasted nearly 3 years and Nintendo made a killer amount of money from day one. Not take a loss first then make profit years down the line.

By the looks of things if you can release a game every year with minimal graphic improvements over the predecessors and customers in huge numbers are still willing to buy on release, pre order or buy special editions such as Call of Duty. Then people aren’t crying out for a new console and perfectly happy with what they have.

2 years minimum which is actually good news for gamers as they are forced to refine existing game engines & squeeze a little more out & the consoles are getting cheaper gradually as the volume is increasing & they become more mainstream.

Also the next gen will most likely be 32 bit so restricted to 3.5-4Gb System Ram max I doubt they will bother with the extra complexity of 64 bit software anytime soon.

I would expect 2Gb Vram minimum & perhaps be modular to allow for future expansion like a new CPU/GPU etc etc
