Greatest FPS and why?

Medal of Honor - Allied Assault multiplayer back in 2001 or when ever it came out. Had a great community back in the blueyonder days before virgin media. Even blueyonder had there own servers back then when it came out.

I just loved the way it played online.

Difficult one I mean, what constitutes best? Individual aspects like storyline, graphics (at the time), ai, multiplayer, revolutionary concept? Or overall?

For me the game I enjoyed and got the most from is css. But Farcry was a pleasure the ai showed so much promise. The maps were vast with different ways of doing everything.

Half life has the most griping storyline. Golden eye showed us multiplayer. Yet doom started it all and quake made the first steps to WASD and mouse gaming with epic soundtracks.

I think due to what followed it half life brought the most and defined a format for a decade it is the best and most important fps

Shadowrun, a game where you could teleport through walls, ceilings and floors, heal and have loads of different spells, was hella epic.

Annoyingly i'm going to have to say counter strike and counter strike source.

I say annoyingly because i don't hate them now, but i used to be so addicted.

...everything.

The fluidity of the gameplay, the awesome weaponry, the versatility of the weaponry, the epic moddability, onslaught mode, M-M-MONSTER KILL.

BF2
CS 1.6
CS: Source

If they'd had stat tracking for CS back when I started playing it (CS 1.4 beta), it would literally be in the 10,000+ hours range in all it's various guises

+1

I don't know why everyone from UT99 snubbed it. I thought it was amazing. Double jump ***! Still haunt the face only server now and again :P

Half Life
Half Life 2
Counter-Strike: Source (I only got into 1.6 a few months before Source was released)
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Battlefield 2
Goldeneye

There are some others, and I don't have time to say why I think any of them are great. :p

Half life 2 (and by extension episodes 1 and 2) is my favourite game of all time, so that, although theres a few games that come joint second; timesplitters 2, tf2 and halo combat evolved.

By the sounds of it I really should get round to playing half life 1, was waiting for black mesa but tbh ill probably be dead by the time thats released :p

Multiplayer wise Rainbow 6 ravenshield.

Everything was perfect.

The health system
The map design and size
The game modes
The weapon balance
The accessories
Ran very very well on most systems
Netcode was fantastic
Promoted team play by design

THIS. you forgot to add GREAT community. I really miss this game. barely touch FPS nowdays as they're all rubbish by comparison not to mention the idiots that play them (maybe not all idiots but way too many for my liking)

Goldeneye has got so many, absolutely, awesome memories for me... thats by playing it in probably the peak of my teenage years 16/17 or so, with mates, with drink etc

Sometimes it would be serious, othertimes just so hilarious that id be in tears of laughter trying to play. I doubt anyone would remember this or find it that funny but remember this was the first game of its kind (pretty much anyway) amd being able to 'slide' around on your knees was funny... especially if you were hiding behind a wall then your opponent just skied by on his knees.. oh I can remember it now, we just p'ed ourselves when it came on the tv.

Anyway apart from that, because it holds so many singleplayer and local MP moments.. the game that probably defined a lot for me was MOHAA. MY first real PC FPS in the sense that I played it online... now the SP had its moments, I think the first level being like Private Ryan was pretty nuts for its day, but its MP is where it stood out.

Im not exagerating here when I say at its peak and it had a pretty big peak, the game could have been as big as CS or at least a very big no.2. Now you might think im crazy but that game was so slick to play, the movement, the maps, the weapons.. it just flowed and it came down to skill and aim. No gimmicks, just pick a weapon which each team had its equivalent and get on the map and do your biz.

Sadly the game lacked support as I believe the devs left EA and most of them ended up doing COD1....but with proper support ie Anti Cheat, patches, map fixes, proper add ons that didnt change the gameplay.. then MOHAA could easily be very much alive today.

Im waffling as the game holds so many memories that ill never, ever, match again and that makes me sad.

Team Fortress Classic - unrivalled teamwork, classplay, excellent skills involved.
Call of Duty 1 - the game that started today's mainstream fps trend, yet did it so right.
