***** The Official Galaxy Nexus Thread *****

just calm down - wait and see what samsung/google will say in the next 48 hours.

While I agree nobody should do anything too rashly at this moment in time, I can't see how this is going to have a good outcome given the video evidence we've seen so far. :(

Hmm.. computer runs on Linux so I need to connect the phone via the "camera" mode. Only shows around 1gb available - so I can't transfer all my music! Is that expected when connecting in camera mode? No windows PCs nearby to compare...

you dont want to use camera mode do you?

There's plenty of comments regarding this on SUK's Facebook page

They seem to be replying to posts with a template reply:

Hi *NAME*, to ensure we investigate thoroughly could you please send the following details to [email protected]: Serial Number, IMEI number, date of purchase, place of purchase, details of issue
your name, address and phone number. We will get in touch as soon as we have more information.

So they're definitely aware of the issue, but that's all for now. Looks like it's affecting most customers though :(

I'm going to wait 24hrs and see if there's a response from SUK. If not then i'll cancel my order with O2 and wait. I'd rather cancel before they send the phone out on Thursday... saves me having to send it back again, which i'll likely have to do.

i don't have the problem, running a voda sim in a o2 handset, but if i did i would be calling the shop and making sure there is a suitable outcome if this cant be fixed. i doubt you will be left high and dry, maybe a recall and replace, or hopefully some sort of fix

You probably do, you just aren't on a 900Mhz band.

i have no idea what that means. :D

to be fair i have not really been anywhere since i had the phone, does it change within certain areas?

Some networks use a 900Mhz band (instead of 1800) for 2G.

I'd advise you and everyone else to read this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19493968&postcount=1

There are multiple reports of an automatic volume-changing problem by Galaxy Nexus owners. In order to rate the scale of the problem I'm putting up a post so we could have a better idea about how many handsets are affected.

All signs point to hardware problem that might lead to mass-recall by Samsung. Everybody has tried to contact Samsung ever since the release, but there's been no definite comment by them nor even a confirmation that they are looking into it. Samsung UK Facebook wall has multiple posts by users, none responded to by Samsung: https://www.facebook.com/SamsungUK?sk=wall

This is what we know so far:

- What happens is that the phones volume will go haywire, it will start lowering volume hectically on the phone, especially during phone calls or when radio is being switched from 3G to 2G, or data connection is activated while WiFi radio is turned off or on.

- This only happens when the phone is on 2G connection (that is, when phone shows G (for GPRS) or E (for Edge) icons for connection).

- It only happens to phones that use 900Mhz for 2G coverage, which is majority of Europe. Confirmed networks in UK since launch are O2, Vodafone, giffgaff, Tesco Mobile. But note that majority of Europe uses 900Mhz (GSM 900) for 2G coverage, so if you live in Europe, there's a large change you would be affected.

- Problem becomes even worse when phone is in a low signal area. By transmitting more to hold onto the signal, the problem becomes more frequent. It often temporarily locks the use of the phone due to 'ghost volume button' being spammed.

- This problem holds back the phone from used properly, at all, in majority of conditions when on 2G network. Calls are dropped, alerts diminish and so on.

- Currently it affects apparently more than 60% of handset owners in UK. It is possible that this problem exists on every phone, other users simply are not on aforementioned networks or do not use 2G.

This issue even happens if Nexus is not used at all and has all radios turned off. If another device that uses 2G (GSM 900 network) is nearby, the Nexus volume will drop. As predicted, this is a radio interference that Nexus is unable to handle properly. Here are videos that show exactly that: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIFRYY25fDo and http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=qXjARxvErjk

This problem also happens during bootloader, so it is not a flaw of Android 4.0

It will help you understand the issue. :)

Just high demand. I'm just going to go and crawl under a rock for a few days, getting really disappointed with this now, I can only maintain this level of excitement for a new product for a few days, now I'm just reserved to the fact that it will take forever.

The launch has been awful. Samsung have a lot to learn. Maybe next time they'll have appropriate stock in the appropriate places for the appropriate people.

I'm getting a bit worried about this volume issue now. It's not good news that it occurs in the bootloader too. I've only experienced it once, but it's not the sort of problem I want to have very often.

I expect a recall will take weeks, which won't be great :(

My phone and being able to make calls on my phone is a vital part of my daily life for business purposes. As a result I need a reliable phone. This is clearly not a 100% software related issue so I see no other option than to return phone and opt for something else.

A product recall with hit them hard (much like the phone signal thing with the iPhone 4), it'll be interesting to see how they handle it though.

Hadn't noticed until I held a blackberry to it and it spazed out. Which frequencies does 3 use?

They use the Orange network for 2G which is at 1800Mhz so it shouldn't exhibit the bug.

Orange, T-Mobile and 3 users should be unaffected afaik.

I'm getting my Nexus tomorrow on Orange, I'll do some playing around and report back.

This is probably more serious that the iPhone 4 incident as offering customers with a case wouldn't solve the problem. Also its not like you can hold your phone different to prevent it, as unpredictable circumstances can cause changes to the volume.

True, but at the end of the day both phones have a hardware fault that causes them to not operate correctly. I can remember when the media found out about the iPhone problem it got ripped to pieces. If this issue is as bad as it seems for the Galaxy Nexus then I expect the same to happen
