Sometimes I'm ashamed to be British...

One thing I do wonder. If there were a group of British commuters on a tram/bus/public transport in a foreign country, say in Asia/Africa and were pelted with stones or shouted abuse at... Would it make the headlines? Would it ever be heard about? Does it happen? Probably.

Definitely - I'm not sure how it's relevant to this at all though :p

AFAIK this hasn't even made the 'headlines' - it just got popular via word of mouth and the net.

Well it has every relevance imo considering we're condemning this woman and calling her every name under the sun. Would a different culture treat a racist member of their society in the same manner? Or, would they accept it and think too right, those pesky Brits got what they deserved!

Neither does ANY immigrant who has ever come to this country from anywhere in the world.

However, if you're referring to the headscarf that a few Muslim women wear, then let me say again that this will be a very very very small % of immigrants that wear this. Also I don't see how that makes it okay for you to be a hypocrit?

I don't want to debate with you if you're going to be an absolute dick. Either make proper debate by intelligent logic, and have me reply to you. Or continue to say rude and offensive things and have me ignore you.

Small percentage? think you should come to Leeds, it's everywhere.

Why you mad though? I don't believe in sitting and mentally masturbating over stuff on an internet forum dude, I've got other productive things to do. I have a problem with burkas because they represent female oppression. Simple. In my mind this is a free country there shouldn't be honor killings and forced marriages here.

Whenever I feel a bit home sick coming on these forums is great as theres always a thread which reminds me why I emigrated haha. Chavs, racial tension, overcrowding, packed trains ahhh Great Britain!

Cannot see what provoked her as mentioned early on in this thread but a public racial outburst is just not on. She needs to be made an example of bigtime.

It's not 'My Britain' woman, it's 'My chav Britain'

Love the fact she was arrested. A few other people could do with being dropping in a cell aswell.

I had it once while I was working at University. A guy I worked with was a bit of a douche. anyways, he was reading and article, and decided to spill his racist verbal diarrhea my way. Talking about, Muslims, etc, etc. I just kept giving him the odd, ah, Hmm, Oh.

Funny bit was when this old fella in his 70s started shouting at him and calling him a bigot. Good Man. I wish I'd said it myself, but he was my colleague, didnt fancy it as it'd follow us round the rest of the time i worked with him.

also. Lol @ oldskool having to point out he's known and banged lots of women. :p

Has the full story come out yet?
I still want to know why she spacked out.
I'm not condoning what she said but people don't spack out like that and if she did it everytime she got on a tram there would be loads more videos of her.

I feel like leeds is a combination of assassins creed and hogwarts because there is loads of ninjas/assassins and wizards everywhere.

I know its not PC but been from the same neck of the woods this did make me chuckle.

I think you'll find peoples views on immigrants and the like change dependant on their location, for instance i know many around the Leeds and Bradford area becoming less tolerant of the majority Islamic communities around mainly because in most parts of Bradford you find that its not a minority any more and makes been non Islamic folk rather difficult at times. (personnel opinion purely based on myself and many others i know)

I used to be one of the leads who worked all the Asian weddings at one of my old jobs and i loved most of them but some Islamic weddings were the times ive actually been treated like utter scum and made to be feel unwanted or like i should leave but i suppose that coupled with the amount of women dressed in Burqas probably just shows a large % of Muslim men stuck in the oppressive dark ages living here.

Im not trying to same that all Muslims are ignorant or should be 'sent back' or any other OTT racist comments, i just believe that some communities and their lack of integration into the native culture/surroundings ruins that area and any businesses around it. Hell come look at all the traditional pubs we no longer have or how many are now takeaways.

Now ive only skim read a few posts and to be fair the above is correct in that the head wear mainly the Hijab and the Burqa are a massive thing. You cannot drive for 5 minutes without seeing hordes of women wearing it.

Apologies if i sound like a right wing racist nut, im far from it honest, you just see things from a different perspective living here.

Well finally there's proof out there that travelling on the Croydon Tramlink is as bad as I've made it out to be and shows why I'd rather get freezing cold/soaked/risk life etc instead of using it. Big shock horror tbh. I would see this sort of thing at least once a week. Why has this one video suddenly made the headlines, or has nobody ever filmed it happening before?

Hate the tram, and I hate the scumbags that get on it. She's a scumbag but lets not fool ourselves into thinking the other scummers round her didn't do something to kick it off.

RIP Nellie Geraghty

I would have to say that the murder of 79 year old Nellie Geraghty, allegedly by two boys aged 17 and 14 is an even more depressing indictment on the state of the country.

I'm sure that someone will suggest that they be awarded medals :p

The Niqab is not a requirement in Saudi Arabia.....again some women wear it. It is important to remember that in some cultural traditions the Niqab and Burka are symbols of wealth and respect ironically for women....

It seems anathema to us, but not everything is as it first appears.

I think you misunderstood me. I wasn't saying that everyone in Saudi was a Wahabbist - just that the Wahabbi movement originates from there. They hold a lot of power and were the driving force in setting up the Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice - the Saudi Religious Police. These guys enforce Sharia law in Saudi Arabia and while the Niqab isn't required, what is required isn't that far off. As I recall, women are required to dress modestly and that includes covering the whole body and wearing a headscarf. The Niqab is required in Mecca or Medina.

I have friends who are Muslim. Today they would often be reported as "moderate Muslims" in the press whereas they just refer themselves as Muslim. Their view on the Wahabbis is pretty negative - essentially they view them as the Taliban with money.

I firmly believe we should offer asylum to those in need. What I strongly disagree with are asylum seekers arriving from other EU countries. There isn't by and large* another country in the EU that people need asylum in the UK from. If someone arrives in France for example, they should claim asylum there rather than traipsing across the country to get into the UK.

*There are people who have recently claimed asylum from Germany over home schooling.

Folks, this thread was locked for a while so wecould prune it as necessary. Some of the comments were out of order but at the end of it, I have to come down on the side of debate and it has been reopened.

Please knock the snide comments on the head. We appreciate that immigration threads always evoke emotion and anger but if you disagree then be rational in your reasons and don't descend into name calling and inappropriate comments. Conversely, if you disagree with those who dislike immigration, don't descend into name calling and keep your counter argument rational as well.

We much prefer good and structured debate rather than pruning, infractions and suspensions.
